There are plenty of national and international days dedicated to our favorite foods and drinks. And crepes get center stage on February 2 thanks to International Crepe Day.
When it comes to celebrations for different foods and drinks, we often think of them as made up holidays that let us enjoy one of our favorite treats. And while that may be true in most cases, there is a legitimate basis for International Crepe Day. In fact, the history of this day is one that is rich in tradition and will have you appreciating crepes even more than you already do.
February 2, the day we celebrate International Crepe Day, is also known by the name La Chandeleur, and is a French holiday where people indulge in both cidre and crepes. As the French Cultural Center explains, this holiday is typically associated with Candelmas, a Catholic holiday, but the reality is that this a tradition that goes much further back and originated with the pagans.

As a symbol of the sun, crepes are typically enjoyed as a way to celebrate the return of the sunnier days. Then there are the people who link the making of crepes with future prosperity of the harvest, as the flour that is used to make these thin pancakes is typically all that remains of the previous harvest.
Considering how deep the history of International Crepe Day goes as both a religious holiday and a day of harvest, it makes sense that people around the world would want to celebrate with this tasty confection.
From savory to sweet, there are many ways we enjoy these thin pancakes. I’ll admit that some of my favorite crepes are the dessert options like the delicious lemon curd option I usually get at Dallas’ Whisk Crepes Cafe. And if you are in the area and want to make a meal of it, Whisk even offers amazing savory options like their Prosciutto crepe with fresh fig, arugula, balsamic, and Parmigiano.
And with it being International Crepe Day, we expect that some creperies are offering special deals to bring people in and celebrate this annual holiday dedicated to the crepe. While you may have to contact your local crepe place to learn if they really are celebrating the holiday, here are a few locations around the country to try for yourself.
Whisk Crepes Cafe – Dallas, Texas
If you are looking for a place in Dallas, Texas to get your crepe on, look no further than Whisk Crepes Cafe (and their sister restaurant, Whisk and Eggs). This picture perfect cafe is once again celebrating International Crepe Day with a special event on February 2. From 5 P.M. until close (or they run out), Whisk is offering two different crepes for just $3, as well as glasses of French wine and cider for just $3. So if you like Nutella or want something simple like butter and sugar, head to Whisk for $3 crepes.
Kaffe Crepe – Reno, Nevada
While Kaffe Crepe has not announced any specials for International Crepe Day, we have to give a shout out to this amazing creperie in Reno. Not only do they have stellar reviews, but their menu is a stunning assortment of sweet, savory, and specials that will leave your mouth-watering. And we wouldn’t be surprised if they did do something special for La Chandeleur, after all, it is the perfect way to celebrate their delectable crepes.

CreperieNYC – New York City
With two locations in New York City, CreperieNYC, is one of the top creperies in the United States, according to the Daily Meal. And as someone who has been there, I can attest to their ability to make amazing crepes. Just like Kaffe Crepe, this creperie has not announced any special events for La Chandeleur, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t check them out anyway. In fact, I think they should be on your list for ways to make any day delicious.
Crepes Tea House – West Springfield, Massachusetts
Over the summer I had the opportunity to try the Crepes Tea House in West Springfield when I went home to visit my parents. And I admit they give other creperies a run for their money. What makes this tea house so special is the fact that its menu is so varied and unique. You could go there every day for a month and still not try everything they have to offer. Whether or not they offer something special for La Chandeleur, the Crepes Tea House is must visit to celebrate International Crepe Day.
Whether your local creperie is celebrating International Crepe Day or not, we think you will want to head out and enjoy these sweet and savory concoctions anyway. They really are the perfect treat any time of the day, and we think there is no better time to get your crepe on then on the day that the world celebrates La Chandeleur.
