Everybody loves Sunchips. There are no other brands that have flavors like Sunchips. Ever wonder how many flavors of Sunchips there are? Look no further and see how they rank!

Sunchips are under the brand Frito Lay. The chips are 100% whole grain, so they are some of the healthiest chips out there if you are wanting something not so salty or packed with unknown  ingredients. The reason we all love Sunchips is for their taste! Because despite being better for you, they don’t have that tasteless flavor.

More from Snacks

Unlike other chips or general snack brands, Sunchips hasn’t really had an abundance of different flavors being released during special occasions or a seasonal flavor launch. For the most part, Sunchips have stuck with the “core 4” as I like to call it. But the brand does have a few “extra” flavors, which are still around in stores today.

If you don’t like Sunchips, then there’s probably something wrong with you. Sunchips are just the perfect chip and offere the best of both worlds: Healthy ingredients and great flavors!

There’s a Sunchips flavor for everyone to love and enjoy and Sunchips are one of those snacks that just goes good with literally anything and the perfect lunch-time munchie.

In the following several slides, you’ll see all of the varieties of Sunchips being ranked based on their flavor. Let me know how you believe this list compares to your own list or another you have seen!

7. Veggie Harvest: Tomato, Basil, & Cheese

There’s really only one reason that this particular flavor variety is last on this list. To be fair to all who love Veggie Harvest, I haven’t tried this flavor yet! Still, want to talk about it and let people know that it does exist.

Sure, I’ve seen this on the shelves at local grocery stores, but I haven’t picked them up as they don’t really  call my attention. I’m so hooked on my favorite flavors (I’ll let you know which, soon) that I just can’t seem to stray away from them from now on (yet, I still want to try these so bad).

Upon doing some research here, one person described this flavor variety as a cross between the Cheddar and the Garden Salsa flavors (sounds delicious).

Looking at this flavor makes me wonder if you’ll actually be able to taste each element in the flavor’s name because any product with anything cheese flavored in it tends to be overpowering, even if you want to be tasting the others that are supposed to go along with it.

A review of the chips online shares that it is easy to pick out each flavor, so we’ll see (whenever I get to trying these particular chips here). If you have tried this flavor already, what did you think? Can you feel each ingredient or is the cheese taking over all the flavor?

Overall, I can’t really give these Sunchips a rating, so stay tuned for the rest of the flavors here!

6. Sweet Potato & Brown Sugar

Yes, I still think these are delicious! However, I don’t feel like I’m eating a Sunchip when I’m eating these, that’s why it’s low on my list here. If something doesn’t make you feel like what you’re eating, then it needs to change here.

When you eat any other Sunchip flavor, your tastebuds can tell it’s a Sunchip, but there’s just something about these Sweet Potato & Brown Sugar chips that taste and feels different.

This particular flavor variety is very sweet for a chip, but what can you expect with the words “sweet” and “sugar” in the flavor name? It’s the perfect blend between sweet potato and brown sugar, which is great because that’s what the flavor is advertising. Still, it doesn’t have that classic Sunchip-related taste like you get when eating basically any other flavor of Sunchips.

A lot of people do not like this flavor variety for the very same reasons that I do; it doesn’t feel like you’re eating a Sunchip. Then again, some people absolutely love the sweetness mixed with the crispiness of the chips. It all just depends on what you are used to!

Upon doing some research, there was definitely some mixed reviews on this particular flavor. It’s still definitely worth trying if you’re one of those people who needs to try every flavor of something. While it’s not the best flavor, it still shouldn’t be avoided or overlooked, so don’t knock them until you try them!

Overall, Sweet Potato & Brown Sugar deserves a 6.5 out of 10.

5. Sun Puffs: Four Cheese

These are definitely the odd ones of the bunch as they’re not shaped like regular Sunchips. Sure, they still got the little impressions of the ruffles to get the same idea. However, they’re much smaller, thicker, and have more of the consistency of a cross between a Cheetos Puff and regular Sunchips.

Don’t worry, though, they’re still 100% whole grain just like all the other flavors of Sunchips. So though they may feel different, they are the same thing!

These are definitely interesting, probably the most interesting out of the whole bunch here. The texture is totally different than the regular variety. The flavor is alright, but for sure not my favorite.

The four cheeses that are used within these chips are the following: Monterey Jack, Cheddar, Gouda, and Mozzarella. While I do like all four of these cheeses, I feel like these chips would’ve been much better maybe with only some Monterey Jack and Cheddar cheese combined.

If you’re a cheese lover (much like myself), then you’ll probably be a fan of these. While they’re not my favorite, I’d still reach for them or buy them if I really wanted to. For now, I’ll just stick with my personal favorites on this list (which you’ll see more of in the next coming slides).

Overall, Sun Puffs: Four Cheese deserves a 7.1 out of 10.

4. Harvest Cheddar

Usually anything Cheddar flavored tends to be a cult favorite for many chips, such as Ruffles or Pringles. Every time I eat these, there’s a flavor that I taste that I just absolutely love, and it tastes familiar, but I can never pinpoint it.

Upon doing some research here, I came to find out that the familiar thing I am tasting is Onion Powder (which I personally love cooking with as well, besides it just tasting good on these Harvest Cheddar Sunchips). In addition to using the obvious cheddar cheese with these chips, the ingredients also suggest that Romano cheese is also used (usually Romano cheese is strong and kinda smelly, but I don’t really taste in these chips, personally).

Obviously, as most Sunchips go with everything, these Cheddar ones are definitely in the top for flavored chips that go with anything and everything else that you may be eating, for example, for lunch.

These chips, to me, are absolutely perfect. They’ve got a strong cheddar taste, but it’s not too strong or messy to the point where you’ve gotta have something to cut the taste out (basically, what I’m trying to convey here is that the amount of cheese is perfect and definitely not overly cheesy if you don’t like things like that). There’s also no overpowering aftertaste.

Overall, Harvest Cheddar deserves a 7.7 out of 10.

3. French Onion

This particular flavor has to be in my top three for sure. It uses some great spices and herbs that I love the flavors of, such as onion powder, green onion powder, parsley, and paprika. Another cult favorite of many other chips besides Sunchips (besides almost anything cheddar or cheese flavored) is Sour Cream and Onion or French Onion.

Upon doing some more research on this flavor of chips as well, I found out some interesting ingredients that are used pretty often in making these chips, and I will list them below:

  • Brown Sugar (the chips definitely aren’t sweet and don’t elude to having brown sugar being used in the ingredients list)
  • Mozzarella Cheese (I can understand this because of what’s used to make French Onion Soup, but don’t really taste it compared to all of the other flavors/ingredients used)
  • Cheddar Cheese (I definitely do not taste this in there, but maybe that’s a good thing that cheese isn’t taking over an onion-flavored chip as well)

Generally, if you’re a fan of onion-flavored chips and snacks alike, then you’ll definitely be a fan of these. Even though they’re not being advertised as Sour Cream & Onion flavored, it for sure tastes like that (which definitely isn’t a bad thing at all, but just making a little note here).

Overall, French Onion deserves an 8.1 out of 10.

2. Original

Obviously speaking, this is the simplest flavor of Sunchips that there is, but also one of the most delicious ones in my personal opinion. There’s not much to them. It’s the classic taste of the 100% whole grain Sunchip with some salt (and the perfect amount, in my opinion).

When doing some research here, this particular flavor has the shortest, most simple list of ingredients used, and that’s obviously expected since it’s a pretty bland flavor. This isn’t to say it’s not delicious, though!

If you’re a huge fan of plain, non-flavored chips, such as Lay’s or even just plain tortilla chips, then these will definitely be on the top of your ranked list as well, just like they are on mine. Trust me, I do love flavored chips, but if a plain chip is good, then it’s really good. Making a plain chip can be difficult because you want to get the most amount of flavor out of lesser amounts of other outside ingredients as well.

Generally, the original flavor of Sunchips is a flavor cult classic favorite for many because it’s just simply salty (but again not too much) and addicting as well. Definitely give these a try if you’ve never had Sunchips before and would like to start somewhere and really get a good taste for what the actual Sunchip itself tastes like without any flavoring to it!

Overall, Original deserves an 8.7 out of 10.

1. Garden Salsa

Finally, the top flavor, in my opinion, is Sunchips: Garden Salsa! This is also  one of those flavors that I think many people tend to overlook because of all of the other classic flavors that exist of Sunchips. This flavor, in my personal opinion, definitely should not be overlooked because it’s simply the best.

If you’re looking for the perfect chip that’s super flavorful, yet a tiny bit of spice hits you, then this is definitely your chip. Although jalapeño peppers are used in the seasonings of this chip, it’s not too spicy. This is a chip kids can enjoy as well if they’re a tad bit adventurous in trying different flavors of certain different foods as well.

One ingredient that is used in these chips is cheddar cheese, which does surprise me because you don’t really taste it (like at all, if you ask me). When I think of anything salsa and all things salsa-related, cheddar cheese definitely doesn’t come to mind. But I guess it just works because this is my favorite flavor of Sunchips, so obviously something is being done right.

Overall, Garden Salsa deserves a 10 out of 10. There will never be a better flavor of Sunchips in my opinion, so don’t come at me for my 10 out of 10 rating.

What did you think about our ranking?

All in all, Sunchips are a chip that everybody can enjoy. There are flavors for absolutely everyone; if you have a sweet tooth, try the Sweet Potato & Brown Sugar flavor, but if you love cheese, then the Sun Puffs or Harvest Cheddar are for you.

Either way, no matter how you put it, there just simply isn’t much out there that really compares to Sunchips at all if you ask me. I mean personally, Sunchips are probably one of my most favorite chips out there in general.

Get these next time you’re at the store, they will surely be a crowd pleaser and a hit with kids and adults alike.

Let us know in the comments down below which flavor is your favorite!
