Dunkin’ Donuts announces new ice cream-inspired iced coffee flavors

Good news: They sound great. Bad news: You have to wait until 2018.

After a month-long voting window, Dunkin’ Donuts announced the winning flavors for its new ice cream-flavored iced coffees. Unfortunately, those winners won’t be in stores until next summer.

Dunkin’ fans voted on five Baskin-Robbins flavors, Jamoca Almond Fudge, Cookie Dough, Butter Pecan, Pistachio and Rocky Road. The winners, by popular demand, are Butter Pecan, Pistachio and Cookie Dough.

The coffee chain on which America runs made the announcement on Instagram.

While the new iced coffee flavors won’t debut until next summer — justice for fall iced coffee drinkers! — the news is still interesting food, or drink, for thought. This isn’t the first time Dunkin’ Donuts has debuted ice cream-inspired iced coffee and years ago. In fact, in 2015, Dunkin’ Donuts offered butter pecan, cookie dough and Rocky Road on the menu and, well, let’s just say butter pecan was better received than the other two ice creams.

Pistachio is the true curiosity. An excellent ice cream flavor, no doubt, but how will pistachio pair with coffee?

In any case, while the Baskin-Robbins tie-in is certainly nice, it’s not necessarily new. And the iced coffee flavors — those from flavor swirls and syrup etc. — are awfully similar to ice-cream-esque flavors already on the menu.

Just look at these “flavor shot” options — unsweetened and sugar-free:

  • French Vanilla
  • Hazelnut
  • Caramel
  • Toasted Almond
  • Blueberry
  • Raspberry
  • Coconut

And these “flavor swirls” — which are sweet and creamy, huh, kind of like ice cream:

  • Caramel
  • French Vanilla
  • Hazelnut
  • Mocha
  • Pumpkin
  • Maple Pecan

Consider, too, you can order the drinks with cream and sugar or blended as a frozen drink. In fact, frozen Dunkin’ coffee already offers butter pecan (and s’mores!) if you just can’t wait.

So worry not while you wait until 2018 for cookie dough and pistachio. Just add sugar and cream and it’s more ice cream than coffee anyways.
