It’s not just TV and film that get awards. Wines do too. The Decanter World Wine Awards 2018 took place this month and it’s time to see the winners.

While we’re used to seeing awards given out for TV and film, that’s not quite the case for food and drink. At least that’s not the case for most of us. Yet, there are many awards and one of those took place this month. The Decanter World Wine Awards 2018 winners have now been announced and it’s time to delve into who they are and why.

You can see the full breakdown of the list at Decanter.

Gold, Platinum, and Best in Show medals are given out to wines from countries all over the world. Some of them you may never have realized produce their own wine. There were winners from North America, across Europe, South America, and Australasia.

How are the wines judged?

The Decanter World Wine Awards go through stages of judging and they are all put in their separate categories. Wineries all over the world need to send four bottles, with the full breakdown of the products, including technical details, pricing, and retail availability. Then the wines are tested among each other in their separate categories. This way the boutique wines aren’t going to go up against the entry level wines.

Judges from around the world carry out the tasting. While they know the basic details about the wine itself, they don’t know the producer of it. This allowed for unbiased taste testing to help rank and judge.

The wines can then get a Gold, Silver, or Bronze medal. The Gold medal winners are eligible for Platinum and then the Platinum eligible for Best in Show.

I’m certainly glad I’m not the organizer with all that to sort through. What about you?

Congratulations to the winners! I know what wines I’ll be searching for my weekend treat.
