DALLAS, TX – FEBRUARY 06: The Dallas skyline is viewed on February 6, 2015 in Dallas, Texas. As crude oil prices have fallen nearly 60 percent globally, many American communities that became dependent on oil revenue are preparing for hard times. Texas, which benefited from hydraulic fracturing and the shale drilling revolution, tripled its production of oil in the last five years. The Texan economy saw hundreds of billions of dollars come into the state before the global plunge in prices. Across the state drilling budgets are being slashed and companies are notifying workers of upcoming layoffs. According to federal labor statistics, around 300,000 people work in the Texas oil and gas industry, 50 percent more than four years ago. (Photo by Spencer Platt/Getty Images) /

8. John’s Cafe — Dallas, TX

When one talks about a “greasy spoon,” what comes to mind is a diner that is no-frills and serves some great comfort food that is less on health and more on flavor.

Come to think of it, this describes most of Dallas’ food scene. It’s come up in the culinary world over the past decade, but Dallas’ food scene is still steeped in Texas flavor, and the greasy spoons in this sprawling city reflect that.

Especially John’s Cafe.

Located in the trendy Lower Greenville area, John’s Cafe is a diner that has become a neighborhood institution. Their breakfast is homey and will keep diners full, especially the pancakes, which, for the kiddos, you can ask to be shaped like Mickey Mouse or some other characters.

One breakfast staple one should try is the gyro omelet, which is an omelet wrapped in a gyro roll. For brunch, make sure you order one of their juicy burgers, which are flavorful and wonderful. All of this comes at a pretty cheap price, especially considering that Dallas restaurants have been upping their prices over the years.

So, it’s nice to find a diner that hasn’t succumbed to gentrification, and keep their prices low, all while serving up some Texas-sized flavor.
