19. Blue Jay Restaurant — Cincinnati, OH

This place is the definition of a ‘greasy spoon.”

In a city filled with great diners, the Blue Jay Restaurant is a diner that stands out ahead of the pack. Situated in the Northside neighborhood, Blue Jay Restaurant has become an institution in this neighborhood north of downtown. The diner specializes in “Cincinnati Style” chili, and it’s a delicacy that is different from other styles of chili.

“Cincinnati Style” is chili but poured over spaghetti (called a two-way). That’s good on its own right, but many others add shredded cheese (three-way), onions (four-way), or, the biggie, beans (five-way). There are a plethora of diners in the Cincinnati region that serves this regional dish, and many could have been on this list.

The Blue Jay, though, is one that gets the top marks.

The Blue Jay has an average rating of four stars on Yelp, and 4.5 stars on Google. Many lauded the restaurant’s great prices (there aren’t many expensive restaurants in Cincinnati, which is a great thing), and their chili, which easily rivals chains such as Skyline Chili and Gold Star.

As with all great greasy spoons, the Blue Jay isn’t all chili. They serve their share of sandwiches, breakfast, and the like. So, for those who don’t want to blow up their calorie intake this early into the New Year, you have options.

But the chili steals the show, and it has the power to lure those away from salads.
