16. Parker’s Chicken and Barbecue — Wilson, NC
Don’t come to this barbecue institution believing that you’ll be able to keep your New Year’s Resolution in tack.
Here in Eastern North Carolina, there is two staple of life: tobacco and barbecue, and in this small-city under an hour away east of the state capital of Raleigh, barbecue joints are like 7-Elevens. The one that stands supreme, though, is Parker’s Barbecue, which draws hungry eaters from all over with their take on Eastern North Carolina barbecue, which is pulled pork with vinegar-based sauce.
Pair it up with yellow slaw and your choice of hush puppies or cornsticks, and you have a meal that will have you saying “bye-bye” to your resolution. While barbecue is the main attraction at Parker’s, it isn’t the only thing on the menu worth trying. They have barbecue chicken, Brunswick stew, boiled potatoes, and other Eastern Carolina staples that will make your mouth water.
Oh, and make sure you pair your meal with the sweet tea and bring cash, as this place still doesn’t accept debit or credit cards. All in all, this is a place that hasn’t changed much in the decades it has been open, and, quite frankly, that is alright by the locals.
