3. Huck Finn Restaurant

Of all three donut shops, this is my absolute favorite. There is just something about this place that always has me coming back, sometimes more than I’d like to admit.

Huck Finn is essentially a fusion of sorts. It’s a donut shop built into the front of a restaurant, which also happens to have a diner vibe to it. The food there is very good, but it’s the donuts that make this place a Chicago classic. In fact, they were recently crowned Chicago’s best classic donut at last month’s Donut Fest; an accomplishment that’s well-deserved.

They also have a much larger variety of flavors than the aforementioned shops, and each one is as good as the next. The buttermilk old-fashioned that’s made here is the best in town, but their red velvet donuts absolutely steal the show. With a soft, yet firm texture in the middle, and a smooth layer of glaze that glistens the top; these donuts won me over the moment I took my first bite. And a glorious first bite it was.

Making delicious donuts isn’t their only forte either, as the restaurant is well-known for their gigantic “Texas donut” that they often top with ice cream for anyone hungry enough to order it. I can’t say I’ve ever tried it myself, but it certainly looks to be worth the calories and/or other negative health effects it could potentially cause.

If you live in Chicago or a surrounding suburb, get to Huck Finn soon. You won’t regret it. And if you live anywhere else in the country, hop on a plane and come visit SWEET home, Chicago! Because with this place alone, it certainly lives up to the name, trust me.
