In honor of National Pi Day, we can’t help but think of the other kind of pie, the sweet and savory kind. And for this year’s Pi Day, why not indulge in these perfect pies.
March 14 is National Pi Day, thanks to the numerical date matching up with the first three numbers in the mathematical constant. And while there are plenty of ways we can honor the numbers 3, 1, and 4, what better way to do this than to eat real pies or pie slices?
Not that we need an excuse, but National Pi Day is as good a day as any to do everything from baking a pie to eating a slice or two, especially with National Pie Day having already come and gone. And with so many flavor options out there, you may be looking for the perfect piece of pie to indulge in.
Whether you go to a bakery, a pie store (here in Dallas we have Emporium Pies who are celebrating the holiday in their own way), or make your own, there are any number of flavors and varieties of pies to choose from. And when I say there are a number of varieties of pies I really mean it, and it is all because of the crust.

Among the different varieties of pies you could choose from there are, filled pies, a top-crust pie, and a two crust pie. Then you have the different pastries used, from a standard pie dough to a crushed cookie crust. And of course, even your fillings can change the way you look at pie because there are savory and sweet options.
For National Pi Day, we think sticking with sweet pies is the way to go. After all, it is a celebration of sorts, and we think sweet is much more fun. Which is why we think these pies are the way to go.
Key Lime Pie – Here is a pie that is creamy and smooth with a sweet and tart flavor combination. If you make this at home, you can go with a store-bought graham cracker crust or just make your own. And you may be surprised to find out just how easy this pie is to make, especially with the recipe shared by Favorite Family Recipes.
Cherry Pie – No two cherry pies are exactly alike. Whether this means the crusts are different, the design of the crust is unique, or the overall flavor is a bit different from the usual tart cherry we expect. If you want to make what Food Network describes as the All-American Cherry Pie, the channel has you covered with a recipe that is actually relatively easy and makes a pie that will leave you wanting more.
Pecan Pie – Growing up I took cooking and baking classes. And one of the pies we had to learn how to make was the pecan pie. While the recipe I used is long gone, this one from Add a Pinch is pretty close to the one I made, which is why I recommend it to anyone looking to make their own pecan pie.
Chocolate Mousse Pie – Chocolate is a must when it comes to any list of dessert items, which is why a chocolate mousse pie had to be on this National Pi Day list. Not only is this light and airy thanks to the mousse filling, but even the crust is chocolate for an all-consuming flavor that will have you wanting to make this for any special event. I love the Epicurious recipe, because it was actually rather easy to make and left me feeling rather accomplished.
Banana Cream Pie – Banana cream pie is a treat that my roommate enjoys every once in a while, which is why I have the Tastes Better From Scratch recipe bookmarked on my phone. And while I love this pie as it is, I have been known to make a few adjustments when I want to jazz things up. This includes adding a layer of caramel at the bottom of the pie to give this a new flavor profile. However, no matter if you make this pie the way the recipe describes or add a bit of personal flair, this is a guilty pleasure.
Apple Pie – There are so many ways you can make a delicious apple pie, and even different crust options that will change your pie in many ways. But, thanks to Pillsbury, we have a recipe for a pie that even they describe as perfect. And I have to agree, as I have made this one a few times and every single time I feel like I am indulging in the perfect piece of pie.
Lemon Meringue Pie – I am a big fan of lemon, which is why I love a good lemon meringue pie. All Recipes has an excellent recipe that will help you make the ultimate lemon pie, and may even inspire you to make this pie all year round, not just for National Pi Day. The tartness of the lemon, the sweetness of the meringue, it is all there for a perfect bite every time.
When it comes to amazing desserts, pies are one of my favorites. With so many flavors and varieties, you can celebrate a day like National Pi Day in any way you want, but hopefully you find inspiration with any of these options. And if you end up making one of these from the list, hit the comments and let us know what you think.
