Enlightened Ice Cream sent us some of their new and creative flavors to sample so we can give you the scoop!
The second flavor of the Enlightened ice cream sample package was, without a doubt, one of my favorites. If I am being honest, I was a bit hesitant prior to tasting it as I wasn’t quite sure how the flavor of French toast would translate to ice cream, and a “healthy one,” at that.
There are so many variables when it comes to creating ice cream flavors; especially in an attempt to formulate a dish that is typically served warm or hot. Sure, there are French toast sticks sold in the frozen section of your local grocery store, but even those are meant to be defrosted and heated up.
My initial thoughts about my first spoonful was that it had a very rich, maple syrup flavor. The overall consistency was similar to that of a typical caramel flavored ice cream, with swirls of maple syrup rather than caramel. There are no actual pieces of French toast in this ice cream, but it hardly matters.

The smooth texture combined with the overall taste makes for a perfect combination. When you consider the fact that it is only 70 calories per serving, and 280 calories for the entire pint, this becomes a very intriguing product.
What really stood out to me with this flavor was the after taste. Much like an actual slice of French toast, I was able to detect a hint of egg flavoring that typically comes from the slices being soaked in egg yolk. While that may sound a bit off-putting, it’s not as bad as you think. In fact, it’s really not bad at all. On the contrary, I found it quite satisfying as it really brought this flavor to life and stayed true what it claims to be.
If you’re not a fan of a very rich, sweet kind of taste, you probably won’t like this one too much. As for me, I happen to love sweet flavors, especially when it comes to certain breakfast items. It’s not often that any brand of ice cream attempts to create this flavor, let alone one which prides itself on guilt-free indulging.
I’d definitely give this one my stamp of approval, and I’d recommend it to anyone who is practicing mindful eating as this can be great alternative to typical, sugary ice cream. Enlightened‘s French Toast gives standard ice cream everywhere a run for its money, and I’d even goes as far as to say that it’s a lot better than anything I’ve ever had.
