Haleem

Bangladesh have come out fighting this tournament. They beat South Africa in their opening game, one of the only real upsets of the 2019 Cricket World Cup, gave New Zealand a run for their money, and made short work of a lackluster West Indies performance. Even though they didn’t make it into the semi-finals, Bangladesh were constantly on the fridges, threatening to oust more popular teams. It was not to be for Bangladesh this year, but with every passing tournament, they have been getting better, and are undoubtedly set to become world-beaters one day.

To celebrate this never-back-down team, we turn to the popular dish, Haleem. Essentially a spicy lentil and meat soup, Haleem is highly-regarded in Bangladesh, and often eaten during Iftar in Ramadan. But it is also occasionally eaten as a snack, or as a main meal. Generally, Haleem takes a while to make, as the meat is slow-cooked, but if you plan your watch party in advance, this dish will be a great addition.

Fish and Chips

In the opening rounds of the 2019 Cricket World Cup, England were practically cruising to the semi-finals. They beat South Africa in the opening game, had a hiccup against Pakistan, before dispensing with Bangladesh and West Indies. But after a stunning batting performance against Afghanistan, everything went pear-shaped. England surprisingly lost two back-to-back matches, against Sri Lanka and Australia, putting their semi-final hopes in jeopardy. They needed wins against two major teams—India and New Zealand—and somehow managed to pull off both, guaranteeing them a spot in the semis. Phew!

After all that excitement, it isn’t surprising that England fans are on the hunt for a crisp fish and chips. The iconic English dish is an absolute must at any cricket watch party—after all, the game was invented in England. Plus, this dish is fairly straight-forward to make at home, and will be a delightful addition to any gathering.
