There aren’t many grandmothers out there making cooking videos on YouTube, but if this becomes a trend, we’re all in.
The stereotypical grandma is usually two simultaneous things: adorable, and a great cook. And that’s exactly what you can expect to witness when you stumble upon the internet’s favorite grandma and cooking show host.
Doña Ángela is the perfect person to have a YouTube channel focused on cooking (hers is called De mi Rancho a Tu Cocina — From My Ranch to Your Kitchen). She loves food, she knows all there is to know about food, and she’s great at explaining how to cook it.
As of October 12, Ángela’s channel has uploaded just 17 videos and has accumulated 1.3 million subscribers in just one month. One of these videos (shown below) has over 3 million views.
There are a lot — A LOT — of cooking “shows” on YouTube. It’s the perfect platform for anyone with a kitchen and even the most basic cooking skills to showcase their love of food. So what makes this one different?
The obvious answer is that you can’t NOT love a grandma in a kitchen with a video camera. But there’s more to it than that.
The production quality of her videos is phenomenal — they look amazing. The videos themselves are simple, mostly just Ángela in front of the camera with whatever food she is preparing. She explains every item and step of the process in a way that even someone who knows nothing about preparing food can follow along.
It also helps that her videos are short, all under 10 minutes and some under five. It’s not a huge time investment to learn a recipe from Ángela, and this also allows her to upload several videos per week.
But what ultimately makes De mi Rancho a Tu Cocina so irresistible isn’t just the food — it’s Ángela herself.
She takes the time to thank viewers for their nice comments about her food. And you can tell she just loves what she’s doing and that she gets to spread her love of food and cooking around the world without leaving her home.
When I retire, this is exactly how I want to spend my days. Making food and sharing the joy of cooking with strangers across the internet.
She calls her viewers “my people.” It’s perfect.
So. Are you going to spend the next hour watching every video on this channel multiple times too, or am I just hungry?
