Zotz

Believe it or not, Zotz were actually originally made and manufactured in Italy, by G.B. Ambrosoli SPA in Ronago, quickly hitting shelves across the U.S. back in 1968.

Zotz are little hard candies that have a powder in the middle that fizzes, and you typically see them being sold in strips of four pieces, all perforated together to hold them in place. Some come in a box of 48, in which there are eight strings of each flavors, making and giving you a total of 192 total pieces of candy within them. Zotz have six current flavors, including:

  • Cherry
  • Orange
  • Watermelon
  • Apple
  • Blue Raspberry
  • Strawberry

If you’ve ever had a Zotz before, you might be wondering why they’re so fizzy and what exactly makes them the way that they are. Well, the powder on the inside of each of the hard candies is made from malic and tartaric acids, and then mixed with sodium bicarbonate. When all of that combined mixes with saliva or water, the fizzing begins.

Something else comparable to Zotz in terms of today’s candies, would be the Fizzy Sherbet Powder Candy that comes with a lollipop that you lick, then dip in the powder, therefore, creating the same fizzing sensation that is similar to what a Zotz feels like.

If you’re into candies that change texture or sensations, then try out some Zotz for yourself, as they are most definitely still being sold in the stores’ today.
