Lasagna is Garfield’s favorite meal, and what’s not to love?

Happy National Lasagna Day! While lasagna is loved all over the world over by countless millions, there’s only one true lasagna super fan: Garfield.

Garfield the cat made his debut in 1976 in the comic strip Jon, by Jim Davis. Two years later the comic strip would be renamed to Garfield, solidifying the larger than life cats popularity. Garfield’s costars, Odie the dog and his owner Jon, enjoy life in small-town Indiana.

Why does Garfield love lasagna so much?

In a Huffington Post interview, creator Jim Davis gives readers the delicious details;

"“Yeah, I love lasagna. I thought it would be funny to have a cat who likes lasagna but as it turns out, I hear from people all the time that their cats love lasagna.”"

Growing up I adored the sarcastic orange cat and his love of the pasta dish. For a short while during my childhood, I too was obsessed with lasagna. Now as an adult I still enjoy it, but not nearly as much. While I still have a taste for carbs and cheese, they do not have a taste for me.

Is lasagna even good for cats?

While cats do love meat, I personally would not feed my cats lasagna. Cats have a hard time digesting dairy and onions. Though if you really want to see if your cat would enjoy this meal like Garfield would, consult your vet.

If you’re crafty enough, you can easily create a cat safe lasagna without onions or dairy. I don’t think they would shy away from a meat and noodle dish — just maybe not as large as what we’re used to seeing Garfield inhale.
