McDonald’s hints we may have an updated chicken sandwich on the horizon

McDonald’s has long been a favorite and go-to for many American fast food eaters. They have their iconic fries and they are the home of the Big Mac and the Quarter Pounder with cheese. Even the Filet-O-Fish has its loyal following of fans. One area where this has not translated has been the chicken sandwich. Fortunately for McDonald’s and chicken lovers, this may soon change.

Last year, McDonald’s gave us the Spicy BBQ Chicken Sandwich as the latest potential chicken sandwich hit. This was part of their crispy buttermilk chicken line and the sandwich featured the chicken doused in their spicy bbq glaze which included a hint of jalapeno. Needless to say, the sandwich failed to match the popularity or hype of either the Popeye’s chicken sandwich or the fried chicken sandwich offering from Chick-fil-a.

McDonald’s looks to compete with the chicken sandwich

However, not all has been lost. Recently in an interview with Time Magazine, McDonald’s USA CEO Chris Kempczinski suggested the company may have another chicken sandwich offering in the future. Acknowledging the negative reaction towards their last launch Kempczinski said:

"“We always will get different perspectives. But we’re certainly working on ways that we can update and upgrade our chicken offering in the U.S. Suffice to say we will continue to be competing and innovating in chicken.”"

Although he did not completely play his hand or give any sort of timeline, he did say that McDonald’s is happy with where they are in the developmental process and they are looking forward to bringing something new to customers by way of chicken.

Next. Americans are sick of cooking chicken. dark

Until then, McDonald’s customers looking to satisfy their chicken craving will have to try to be happy with their current chicken offerings. This still leaves the buttermilk crispy chicken sandwich, the sometimes underwhelming yet frugal McChicken, and the company’s classic chicken McNuggets. Perhaps McDonald’s can surprise us with at least a spicy McNugget version. Only time will tell. It should be fine as long as I can still have fries with it.
