Food Network’s newest recipe video shows chicken parmesan drumsticks

Most of the time, the Food Network is great. They provide people with easy recipes that taste amazing. But sometimes, a recipe comes out of left field that leaves you scratching your head and thinking “why??” That was pretty much my reaction to watching their video for cheesy chicken drumsticks.

As with any video, it starts out fine. Put Italian breadcrumbs in a Ziploc bag along with canola oil, kosher salt, and pepper. Mix it together in the bag and then drop in your chicken drumsticks that are slightly damp with water. Sounds perfectly good, right?

Close the bag and then shake the heck out of it so all the drumsticks are covered with the breadcrumb mixture. Next, place the drumsticks in an oven-safe dish and make sure they are far enough apart that the chicken cooks evenly and doesn’t steam. Bake at 450 degrees for 30-35 minutes.

Food Network recipe includes drumsticks, mozzarella, breadcrumbs and parmesan

Once the chicken comes out of the oven, cover it with marinara sauce. Ok, this is when it starts to get weird. Sure, it’s like chicken parmesan or something like that, but…on drumsticks? Next, cover with parmesan cheese and thick slices of mozzarella. It says thinly sliced in the actual recipe, but those slices in the video look pretty thick to me.

Put the drumsticks back in the oven for about 10 minutes or until the cheese is melted and slightly brown. And that’s it!

It’s a unique take on chicken parmesan, but something just doesn’t seem right. Yes, chicken and cheese go together, but cheesy drumsticks (or chicken wings, for that matter) sounds like something your aunt makes when she’s trying to “experiment.” Ok, maybe just my aunt.

The recipe also says to use eight drumsticks and that it serves four people. In what world does someone only eat two drumsticks?? Even I, who am skeptical of how these taste, would eat three just for the cheesy, sauciness alone. Who comes up with serving sizes anyway? (And why are they trying to starve us?!)
