Great British Baking Show winner Nadiya Hussain responds to rainbow bagel controversy

The rainbow bagel controversy from last week’s episode of The Great British Baking Show continues as season 6 winner, Nadiya Hussain reacts to Paul Hollywood’s comments. As a quick recap, on last week’s episode, the bakers had to make rainbow bagels for their technical challenge.

When the judges, Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, talked about the bagel, Paul mentioned that the rainbow represented the NHS. People were obviously upset since the rainbow is most well-known as being the symbol of gay pride.

Multiple complaints were made online and directly to the British broadcasting regulator and now Nadiya Hussain has responded to Hollywood’s comment as well.

She was on Hits Radio Breakfast and when asked about it said, “Why did [Paul] call it an NHS bagel?”

Great British Bake Off rainbow bagel scandal continues as Nadiya Hussain comments

When the co-host of the show, James Barr noted that Hollywood must have known what the rainbow symbol is usually known for, Hussain went on to say, “I know, like reference it properly for goodness sake, Paul Hollywood, come on.”

She then talked about her love for the rainbow bagel and how she likes to smear it with sweet vanilla cream cheese and then sprinkle it with rainbow sprinkles and said “Like, if you’re going to go rainbow and gay, you’ve got to go all the way!”

Hopefully, with these comments, Paul will issue an apology or really, any kind of statement saying he messed up. While this started with something as simple as a bagel, it’s about much more than that. It’s about a symbol for a marginalized group that some people are trying to take away from them. The NHS can find it’s own symbol. This one belongs to the LGBTQ+ community.

It will be interesting to see if this story goes away after the next episode airs on Friday. This week is all about chocolate.

Next. The Great Canadian Baking Show should be available to stream everywhere. dark
