If you are going to watch any Hallmark Christmas movies (and you know you will) these are the foods that you need to have on hand.

If the calendar says December, then that means if you turn on the Hallmark Channel at any time, day or night, there will be a Hallmark Christmas movie waiting for you. Over the years these harmless, fun holiday movies have become a traditional part of the season and something many fans look forward to all year long.

And the best part of the numerous holiday Hallmark movies? Once you’ve seen one, you’ve pretty much seen them all. Because they are all essentially the exact same movie. Boy connects with girl. They dance around their feelings for each other for two hours and kiss at the very end to live happily ever after.

Sure, there might be a Prince or Princess here or there. Possibly a dramatic confrontation that will send the couple their separate ways temporarily. But in the end, they end up together on Christmas as snow begins to fall.

Seriously. They are all the same movie. And most people, myself included, wouldn’t have it any other way.

The perfect snacks for watching a Hallmark Holiday movie.

Anyway, since one Hallmark movie is just like every other one, it makes planning what to snack on while watching them incredibly simple. Whether it’s just you and your significant other or maybe a Hallmark watch party to celebrate the holidays, these are the foods you will need to have since each and everyone is important and shows up in almost every movie.

Coffee (in a to-go cup.)

Usually, right in the beginning of (Insert the name of any Hallmark movie here.) the couple that isn’t a couple yet get together in (Insert the name of small-town here) to have coffee. It usually includes a walk around the town and maybe some shopping in a local small shop where everyone is ridiculously friendly.

Which is why if you want to add some authenticity to your experience, the coffee has to be in a to-go cup. Something you can sip on while the movie plays out.

Hot Cocoa and/or Hot Apple Cider

At some point in literally every Hallmark movie, someone will drink hot cocoa. It happens every single time. Yes, they may talk about or even have some hot apple cider as well, usually when picking out a tree or engaging in another traditional Christmas activity, but hot cocoa is always present. Usually in garish Christmas mugs.

I kid you not. If you were playing a holiday movie drinking game and had to drink every time someone had hot cocoa, you wouldn’t make 20 minutes in without passing out.

Gingerbread

This can take house or person form, but gingerbread is ubiquitous with Hallmark movies. Usually, our star crossed couple find themselves in a gingerbread house building competition or making a gingerbread house for the unrealistically well-behaved kids in the story. You can’t have a Hallmark movie without gingerbread in some form.

Christmas cookies

This one should be obvious but it bears mentioning. Much like the coffee or gingerbread, at some point, someone will be decorating Christmas cookies. You can bet money on it. This is usually the point where our lovely couple discovers they are falling for each other but don’t realize it yet. This despite the fact it’s obvious to everyone else.

Having a cookie decorating party while one of the movies plays in the background sounds like way more fun than it has any real reason to. Really.

Normally there will be a Christmas dinner scene where invariably someone serves a roast or possibly a formal party where appetizers are being served. This usually happens toward the end just before our couple lives happily ever after. If you want to take it to the next level of Hallmark geekiness, feel free to add this to the evening.

Now go make some hot cocoa and gingerbread and watch a movie. Personally, I would recommend anything with Lacy Chabert, in particular A Royal Christmas which also features Jane Seymour. Yes, that Jane Seymour.
