Mac and cheese is one of the best dishes to ever be created. It’s cheese and pasta. Dairy and carbs. When done right, it’s a masterpiece. So why, you might ask, did the number one name in mac and cheese, Kraft, decide to mess with it and make it pink? Let’s discuss.
Kraft launched a contest this week where they are giving away kits of their new limited-edition mac and cheese. Sounds pretty great, right? Well, it would have been if they hadn’t decided to add in a packet of pink candy-flavored powder that you’re supposed to mix into the sauce. The mix will turn the mixture bright magenta.
I have many questions but the main one is why?? Sure, people think of red and pink for Valentine’s Day but to make mac and cheese pink AND candy-flavored feels like sacrilege. Some food god is out there and she is pissed.
So what is in this pink powder? Good question. Apparently, the bright color comes from beetroot and carrot concentrates. That sounds good. At least the color is from vegetables. If Kraft would have stopped there, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. It’s the sweet part that’s the problem.

Besides the vegetable concentrates, the pink powder also happens to have fructose, “natural flavors,” and vanilla extract. Vanilla extract and pasta do not scream “match made in heaven.”
There are sweet pasta dishes out there that work. Kugel is a sweet Jewish pasta dish that lots of people like. But it’s not pink and it’s not trying to be mac and cheese.
If for whatever reason, you’d like to try your hand at winning a box of this sweet, pink mac and cheese, you can head over to CandyKraftMacandCheese.com and enter. The contest closes on Monday, Feb 8 at 12 P.M. CST and a thousand people will get a box of the pink stuff. Whether you serve it on Valentine’s Day is up to you.
