You have to hand it to Food Network and the producers of Worst Cooks in America. It’s a show that doesn’t pretend to be something that it isn’t. If you tune in expecting to see great dishes prepared with style and panache, well you’re going to come away very disappointed.

However, if you watch in order to see some of the more basic cooking skills explained to you like you’re a twelve-year-old and to have a great laugh at someone else’s expense, Worst Cooks in America is just what the doctor ordered. And you might need a doctor if you eat the cooking of some of these recruits.

For Week 3, Anne Burrell and Michael Symon made it all about grilling. And yes, that meant fire and smoke and all the hilarity that implies. First up the recruits had to go on a scavenger hunt to find out what they were cooking and once they did, they could only use camping gear to prepare their meal.

After a lot of running around, it was Jonathan who got the victory with his lamb shish kabobs and with it, immunity during the Main Dish Challenge. And if you’ve seen him cook, he would likely need it more than most.

Worst Cooks in America can be funny and surprisingly educational.

For the Main Dish Challenge, the teams had to cook with game meat. The Blue Team got boar and the Rockin’ Red Team was served bison. Once the mentors explained what those were (I’m serious.) they demonstrated how to prepare their meal.

This is where Worst Cooks really shines. For an inexperienced cook or people like the recruits who want to learn the ins and out of the kitchen, watching the Main Dish Challenge explained can be an eye-opening bit of television. Both Burrell and Symon are great at making preparing a complicated dish sound so easy anyone could do it.

And the best part is that Food Network puts the full, unedited version of the instructions on their YouTube channel for you to watch. Any home chef can watch and actually learn a thing or two without having to go on Worst Cooks in America and embarrass yourself in front of the whole country.

In the end, it was fan favorite Eric who was sent home after some issues with his apples and donuts when he tried to make a grilled dessert in the Head to Head Challenge. This means the Blue and Red Teams are now all even at three members each.

The menu next week will take an international turn and you can be sure that will provide plenty of chances for some laugh-out-loud comedy. And maybe we can all learn something too. But mostly comedy, definitely.
