Duff Goldman and Buddy Valastro went into the season finale of Buddy vs Duff 3 tied not only in score but in overall wins. The two cake masters were tied at 1,600 points each and tied at one win each from the previous two seasons of the competition, making these final two cakes for all the marbles.
Buddy suggested that in order to make sure they could really bring out their best, instead of two days to make their cake they would get three. And for the theme the bakers went with monsters. What kind of monster was entirely up to them, but you knew that both Buddy and Duff were going to go completely over the top.
Buddy decided to stick with what he and his team does best. Amaze with sheer scale and attention to detail. In that vein they designed a massive dinosaur that is the spiritual descendent of Godzilla. The cake was truly massive and included some of the most detailed and stunning sugar work the entire series has ever seen that included the spikes lighting up.
Like Buddy, Duff stuck to his strengths, namely tech wizardry and a really great story. His team designed not one but several small cakes as part of a toy factory from hell. But the pièce de résistance was Marty, the nine foot tall cake monster inspired by Frankenstein. In addition to the size, the cake also flipped from a horizontal position to vertical, which when you’re dealing with cake is incredibly hard to pull off.
Will baking fans see a Buddy vs Duff Season 4 down the road?
Watching the judging unfold, I was pretty sure that Duff was going to walk away with the win. I felt his story was better and his cake, or cakes, just flat out beat Buddy’s on the all important ‘wow” factor. However, it seemed that the 50 judges from around the country didn’t agree with my assessment.
Buddy Valastro was named the winner and the King of Cakes, beating Duff by a final score of 247-245. Yep, Buddy got the win by two points and now has a two to one edge in the three seasons of Buddy vs Duff.
Now, as anyone who has watched the series knows, scoring controversies have dogged Buddy vs Duff since Episode 1 of Season 1. The panel of 50 judges was supposed to help mitigate that as well as make things simpler due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it’s tough not to mention that Duff’s team does not have a dedicated sugar artist, while Team Buddy does. Little things like that make you wonder if both teams had the same skill set, would Buddy have been able to get that two point win?
It’s something we’ll likely all find out if there is a Season 4 of Buddy vs Duff. Because while this season was supposed to settle the matter once and for all, it doesn’t really feel like that has really been accomplished. And who wouldn’t want to see more cakes like the ones we all saw this year?
