With every new week comes a new TikTok trend and one of the latest is “sleepy chicken.” While most TikTok recipes are pretty harmless, this is anything but. These “fun” but actually dangerous trends come up at least once a year. Remember when people were eating Tide pods or taking spoons of cinnamon? Do we never learn?

But what is sleepy chicken? I have a feeling you’re not going to believe this. Sleepy chicken or Nyquil chicken has people braising or boiling chicken in cold medicine.  Do y’all have too much time on your hands?

By boiling the chicken in the cold medicine, it cooks off all the alcohol and the water and leaves only a super-concentrated form of the medicine. Do I need to say why this is so dangerous?? If you have a cold, this is not the way to get rid of it.

It also happens to turn the chicken the color of the cold medicine. So if the medicine is blue, it turns the chicken the color of a blue raspberry Sour Patch kid. A color that chicken should never be!

Sleepy chicken is the latest dangerous TikTok trend

Doctors are obviously up in arms. Dr. Aaron Hartman told MIC.com that:

"If you ate one of those cutlets completely cooked, it’d be as if you’re actually consuming a quarter to half a bottle of NyQuil."

And it’s not just eating the sleepy chicken that’s dangerous, the fumes that come off of the dish when you’re cooking it are also dangerous. Dr. Hartman also mentioned that:

"Inhaled, these medicines also enter your bloodstream really quickly and are not going past your liver for detoxification. The effects can be quite bad depending on how much you inhale."

And you really have no idea how much of the drug you’re taking in. Because whether you eat the chicken or just breathe in the fumes, it’s almost impossible to know the dosage.  And taking too much can lead to liver damage, dizziness, vomiting, and seizures.

So while TikTok trends can be fun, this is one you’ll want to stay away from. There are enough dangers to our health in this world. Let’s not add one more.
