Welcome to Fast Food Flashback, where we at Guilty Eats take a stroll down memory lane and look back at some of the fast food menu items that may be gone but will never be forgotten. This time we put the spotlight on a fondly remembered item from Taco Bell.

Bacon is something that there can never be too much of on a menu. You are literally never going to hear someone walk into a restaurant and say “What, is bacon all this place has? Let’s get out of here!” That will never happen and if someone ever says that to you, walk away.

So it should come as little surprise that back in the 1990s and early 2000s, Taco Bell decided to go all in on bacon. Their menu was filled to overflowing with it and the centerpiece was their “Sizzlin’ Bacon Menu” promotion.

It included a number of new items, some of which we may talk about in future Fast Food Flashback columns. But today we’re here to discuss the awesomeness that was the BLT Soft Taco. That’s right. Taco Bell at one time had a bacon, lettuce and tomato soft taco.

The BLT Soft Taco from Taco Bell was tasty greatness in taco form.

Like the name implies, the BLT Soft Taco included bacon, lettuce and tomato on a flour tortilla along with cheddar cheese and club sauce. And yes, every part of that sentence sounds so freakin’ good we can barely stand it.

And it was just 99 cents! If you had a twenty on you you could walk away from your local Taco Bell with a bag full of the things and still have change for a soda. Amazing.

We just can’t figure out what’s more perplexing. That it took until the 1990s for Taco Bell to realize that putting bacon on a warm soft tortilla is like a license to print money or that they actually had the audacity to take it off the menu.

Because that’s exactly what happened. Once the promotion had run its course the BLT Soft Taco was sent to the fast food graveyard, never to be seen again. The fact Taco Bell never brought the item back for a return engagement is shocking in and of itself. Because if they did it would be an instant hit.

It’s bacon. On a taco. How can that lead to anything but happiness and joy?

If you want to see the BLT Soft Taco make a comeback, hit social media and let Taco Bell know. Who knows, maybe it will make a comeback. Because there is always room for more bacon in the world.
