Great Chocolate Showdown episode 6: No more immunity
Great Chocolate Showdown was back for episode 6 and you can definitely feel the pressure coming down on these bakers as they get closer and closer to the finale. And the challenges are definitely not getting any easier either.
The first challenge started off as they always do with one of the judges demonstrating a new technique for the bakers. This week it was all about modeling chocolate and making flowers out of it. Chef Cynthia Stroud demonstrated the gorgeous flowers you can make out of chocolate and made it look entirely too easy. Then it was the bakers’ turns.
They had to make three cupcakes with a different flower on each one. Most of the bakers mixed in some kind of fruit into their cupcake creation except for Casey who made a honey cake with a white chocolate goat cheese filling.
All the cupcakes looked amazing but the flowers on Renu and Vanessa’s definitely stood out. Renu took the top spot, but the judges surprised everyone by revealing that there is no more immunity for the rest of the series. Since the finale is only a few weeks away, all contestants will have to bake in every challenge.
Great Chocolate Showdown got a little salty this week
On to the elimination challenge! This week, each baker had to make a dessert that featured chocolate and a salty snack. The snacks included popcorn, cheese crackers, pretzels, bacon, and potato chips.
Renu chose potato chips, T got cheese crackers, Casey picked popcorn, Kathy got pretzels, and Venessa chose bacon. Renu could have switched her snack with someone else’s but she chose to keep the chips.
The bakers really showed off their skills in this challenge. Venessa made ice cream without using an ice cream maker, T made an opera cake using cheese crackers, and Casey made popcorn tacos, while Kathy made a chocolate pretzel tart and Renu created a chocolate crepe cake.
The judges may have had issues with some of the desserts but I would have eaten them all!
As for the results, T took the top spot with his opera cake. When he got cheese crackers, I was so worried. How do you make chocolate and cheese taste good together? But he totally did!
Kathy and Renu were unfortunately in the bottom two. Kathy’s chocolate crust was a little too hard and the pretzel flavor didn’t come through. Renu’s crepe cake was not up to her usual decorating standards and was more on the savory side than the judges wanted. In the end, Kathy was the one to be sent home.
Next week, the final four bakers have to create 3D chocolate globes (I’m already nervous) and then have to make a dessert inspired by the Purdy’s chocolate bar.
