The food brands are always a menace when it comes to April Fool’s Day and this year is no different. But Hellmann’s and Butterfinger may have topped them all with their new dessert mayonnaise. Yes, you read that correctly.

The mayo and candy bar brands have gotten together to create the first-ever dessert mayonnaise. The mayo is swirled with the chocolatey, peanut buttery, crunchy candy bar. And yes, it looks as horrifying as it sounds.

Luckily, this is just a prank but we also live in a world where this could 100% be a real thing which is what makes it such a believable prank. Because there is totally some marketing manager somewhere looking at this and thinking “what a good idea!”

But Hellmann’s and Butterfinger are not only providing a bit of fun for the first of April, they are also providing a recipe.

Hellmann’s Butterfinger Crispety Crunchety Cake includes both mayo and Butterfingers but not exactly together. Or at least not in a way that will give you nightmares.

The ingredients include:

  • 1 (15.25 oz) yellow cake mix
  • 1 cup Hellmann’s® or Best Foods® Real Mayonnaise
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup peanut butter, warmed, divided
  • 2 cups chopped-up Butterfinger® bars or Butterfinger® Baking Bits, divided
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 2 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

To prepare the cake, you’ll first want to preheat the oven to 350 degrees and then grease and flour a 13 x 9 pan. Then beat the cake mix, mayonnaise, water, and eggs for 30 seconds in a bowl with an electric mixer on low speed. Then increase the speed to medium for another 2 minutes. You could do this with a wooden spoon or whisk but it’s going to take longer and involve a whole lot of elbow grease.

Pour half the batter into the greased and floured pan and then dollop 3/4 cup of warmed peanut butter and half the chopped Butterfinger onto the batter. Then cover with the remaining better. Bake for 30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean and cool for 10 minutes.

Once the cake is cooled, mix together the remaining peanut butter and milk until blended, and then whisk in the confectioners’ sugar and cocoa powder until smooth. Spread the frosting on the cake and top with the remaining chopped Butterfinger.

You might be thinking “mayo? in a chocolate cake??” but it’s actually a pretty common thing. You won’t really taste it at all. It’s just there for moisture. Mayo is really just oil and eggs so it does make sense.

While Hellmann’s Mayonnaise Made with Butterfinger might not be real, you can definitely still enjoy chocolate and mayonnaise in a non-gross way.
