Did you know that there is such a thing as the “World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast?” And do you know where it takes place or how long it has been going on?

If pancakes are your main squeeze when it comes to breakfast, then this might just be information you already know. And if you happen to live in Western Massachusetts, you already have a leg up on this information.

As someone who grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts, the annual pancake breakfast was a sign that spring was truly in full swing. It was a celebration that honored not only the warm months to come, but also the birth of the city itself. In fact, since 1986, the World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast has been a celebration of the “spirit of Springfield,” in honor of its founding on May 14, 1636.

This was an event that students looked forward to every year, as it was a chance to eat all the pancakes we wanted, sometimes for free. (One year, I even got to help out as a volunteer handing out plates of pancakes, which meant even more free pancakes.) It’s an event that only happens for a few hours, but makes sure that thousands are fed. And as Explore Western Mass points out, this breakfast “will last until the last flapjack has been flipped.”

Springfield, Massachusetts once again celebrates the World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast

Much like it has in previous years, the pancake breakfast will once again shut down Main Street, as tables, vendors, chairs, and more line the streets to serve visitors all the pancakes they can eat. In honor of the 386th birthday of the city, pancakes will be served from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m., and yes, there will be bacon too!

For those unfamiliar with the event and wanting to know more, 22 News reports that,

"The event includes pancakes, bacon, milk, orange juice, and coffee for $3, $1 for children under 12, and free to 70,000 public school students that have advance tickets. It is prepared by hundreds of volunteers."

With so much to look forward to in terms of community and delicious food to kick off the day, we can only hope that Springfield’s pancake breakfast truly returns to being the “world’s largest.”
