Milkshakes are one of the best things on the planet Earth but with all the different flavors, everyone has their favorite. But what milkshake flavor is the most popular per state? And what’s the most popular flavor in the whole country? Well, RTA Outdoor Living looked at Google Trends over the past year to see which flavor comes out on top.

Let’s start with the big picture. The flavor that is the favorite of the entire United States is strawberry. As a strawberry milkshake expert, I have known that this was the best flavor for years so it’s nice to see that everyone else is catching up.

A few states seemed to concur with this result including California, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin. As a resident of Michigan, I’m very upset that my state made the wrong decision.

The next most popular flavor was, of course, chocolate. It’s honestly surprising it wasn’t number one with how much everyone loves chocolate. The states that ranked chocolate at the top of the flavor board include Hawaii, Indiana, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee.

The chocolate malt milkshake also made the number one stop in a few states which is quite shocking. It’s not exactly a flavor you see all the time. But Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, and Oklahoma are all about this flavor.

In terms of other chocolate flavors, one state (Florida) loves a Nutella milkshake and five states are all about the Oreo milkshake including Kentucky, Minnesota, Montana, New Jersey, Nebraska, and Wyoming.

After chocolate, vanilla is one of the next most popular. It’s the favorite of people of Alabama, Connecticut, Georgia, Maryland, and New Hampshire.

According to the information RTA Outdoor Living gathered, the most popular milkshake flavor in the rest of the states looks like this:

  • Alaska- Shamrock shake
  • Arkansas- Banana
  • Delaware- Banana
  • Idaho- Orange creamsicle milkshake
  • Massachusetts- Coffee
  • Nebraska- Shamrock shake
  • New York- Pineapple  (this one is very surprising)
  • North Dakota- Shamrock shake
  • Ohio- Peanut Butter
  • Rhode Island- Coffee
  • South Carolina- Peach
  • South Dakota- Shamrock shake
  • Texas- Pineapple
  • Vermont- Coffee
  • Virginia- Peppermint (this is very surprising too!)
  • West Virginia- Orange creamsicle milkshake
