Potato Chips: 5 reasons salt & vinegar is the best flavor

Is there anything better than snacking on potato chips when a craving for salt hits? I think not. And when it comes to flavors, there is one that stands out from the rest of the packs. For me, that has to be the Salt & Vinegar potato chips.

There is just something about this flavor combination that just works every single time. And it doesn’t even matter what brand of chips it is or even the style of chip (think baked, kettle cooked, etc…).

So what is it about these chips that has us reaching for them every time we want a bag of potato chips?

5 reasons we love Salt & Vinegar Potato Chips

  1. It is one of the only potato chip flavors that seems to be consistent no matter what brand or style of chip. These potato chips always deliver on the flavor with every bite. And while the flavor may not be the exact same across brands, that does not negate the fact that when you grab a bag of salt and vinegar, you know that’s what you are going to taste with every single chip you put in your mouth. While Serious Eats broke down the acidity level (and therefore the amount of vinegar) we get with each brand, it doesn’t detract from the fact that every bite seems consistent with the last.
  2. It always tastes good! There is something about this flavor that always delivers. I have never been disappointed with a bag of salt and vinegar chips. And if that’s not a reason to love this particular flavor, I don’t know what is! (That being said, UTZ is at the top of my list for favorite brand when it comes to Salt & Vinegar potato chips.)
  3. Unlike some flavors, it feels like most brands offer their own variety of salt and vinegar. And that means, when you are craving that flavor you can get it no matter where you are or what store you are shopping at. Just like the original salted potato chip, salt and vinegar can be found in just about every brand and variety.
  4. In terms of the flavor, there is something to be said for salt and acid coming together. And that is exactly what you get with salt and vinegar, the perfect mix of acidity and saltiness to satisfy our cravings.
  5. And last but not least, it really does feel like this is a flavor that packs a punch. What I mean, is that when you grab a bag of salt and vinegar chips that is exactly what you are tasting. It’s a strong flavor of salt and vinegar. There are no questions about what you are eating, what the flavor is, or even whether or not they are any good. These chips are what they are, and they deliver exactly what the flavor says it will be.
