Did you know that there is expected to be a butter shortage just in time for the holidays? And if that is the case, Hellmann’s has some suggestions for how they can replace the butter in some of our every day kitchen creations.

That’s right, in a number of dishes and baked goods, we can swap the butter for the Hellmann’s Mayonnaise and get a delicious dish, cake, or sandwich just like if the butter was involved (and in some cases it makes our dishes and baked treats even better). If you have never tried this before, we have some ideas to help you break the ice and get that mayo working for you!

In the past, we have used Hellmann’s to coat pork chops before adding shake and bake or even just seasoned bread crumbs. And we have even used mayonnaise instead of butter to make grilled cheese sandwiches (instead of putting butter in a pan, we coated the bread in mayo and fried it up that way).

But that’s not the only way we can swap the butter out for mayonnaise. And luckily for us, Hellmann’s had some suggestions for us.

Hellmann’s Mayonnaise can replace butter in a number of cooking and baking applications

So what are some of the Hellmann’s hacks that the brand has for us?

Up first, they recommend taking the butter out of mashed potatoes and instead using mayo. The mayo will make the mashed potatoes creamier and even give it a richer flavor over all.

Another way to replace butter is in your chocolate cake mix. In fact, the brand actually has a recipe for a super rich chocolate cake that uses the mayo to bring the moisture and even help to enrich the flavor. If you have never tried these, we recommend giving it a try at least once (after we were reminded that we could do this, we gave it a try and it ended up being quite good).

Overall, it seems like the best way to use mayo as a butter replacement is in batters and dough recipes. And that makes sense to us. But it is not the only way to make it work, and we love it as a way to add richness and moisture to everything from grilled cheese sandwiches to any sandwich we are frying up for a little richness and crispness.

Plus, since we are heading towards Thanksgiving and Christmas, turkey will definitely be on the menu. And instead of putting butter under the skin of your turkey, why not opt for mayo to help make that skin crisp and delicious.

There are a few different ways we can use Hellmann’s mayo and if we really are facing a butter shortage, then it may just come in handy this holiday season.

What do you think Guilty Eaters? Are you going to be swapping out the butter for mayo in recipes this holiday season? Have you ever used mayo in place of butter in your recipes before? We want to know!
