The Great British Baking Show was back with episode 5 of season 13 and this week, it was all about desserts. What makes desserts different than cake and cookies, I will never know, but apparently, there is some difference.

To say this week was better than last would be an understatement but that’s only because it wasn’t an international week.

It all started, as it always does, with the Signature Challenge! The bakers were tasked with making steamed puddings or steamed cakes for us Americans. This challenge created some amazing creations and while Paul and Prue thought the watermelon essence was too much, Syabira’s watermelon puddings were colorful and gorgeous. Definitely a standout.

Sandro’s Apple and Cherry Crumble puddings and Maxy’s Sticky Toffee puddings also looked ridiculously delicious. Good enough that you’d like the plate!

It was Dessert Week on the Great British Baking Show this week

On to the Technical Challenge! This challenge was set by Prue and the bakers had to make a lemon meringue pie. This is one of my favorite pies ever so I was hoping for good results and most of the bakers did do well considering they had next to no recipe.

Syabira, Dawn, and Carole had probably the worst in the bunch with undercooked crust, crumbling crust, and not enough filling. Janusz came out on top with a gorgeous and drool-inducing lemon meringue that I would definitely pay quite a bit for.

And finally, the Showstopper! The bakers had to make a surprise mousse cake. There had to be cake,  mousse, and a surprise on the inside. The surprises ranged from strawberries to cupcakes to planets and even the Earth’s core. Sandro made a stunning and impressive Earth mousse cake that earned him the title of Star Baker this week.

Dawn and Carole were in the bottom this week and it was Carole who went home. She has not been doing great for the past couple of weeks so this wasn’t a complete surprise.

Next week, it’s Halloween Week! I am praying to all the ghosts and goblins that the judges will give them challenges that are fun, technically challenging, and super spooky!  If nothing else, Noel is going to have a blast with this theme.
