Holiday Baking Championship: Gingerbread Showdown was back for the penultimate episode of season 2. This week, the three teams of bakers had to make gingerbread displays that show off the sports and games that would be played at the North Pole. These creations were truly spectacular.

The three teams of bakers included Sean and Tie, Amy and Ashley, and Peter and Alexa. Sean and Tie made a mini golf game with elves rolling through the obstacles instead of gold balls. It was ridiculously cool.  Amy and Ashley made a polar bear race where the elves were riding the polar bears to the finish line. They even had a levitating elf! Peter and Alexa made a reindeer tug-of-war game with some truly amazing architecture.

There was also a twist in this episode where the bakers had to make a dessert that fits into their display and featured a strong ingredient. Sean and Tie used pink peppercorns and made a hot cocoa bonbon flame, Peter and Alex used tequila and made key line pies, and Amy and Ashley used balsamic vinegar and made cherry chocolate entremet penguins.

Who won the dessert challenge? That was Sean and Tie. Tie made the most amazing cocoa bonbons and they looked just like flames that would be lit to start off the games.

Holiday Baking Championship: Gingerbread Showdown wasn’t all fun and games

Besides the twist, this episode was not without its drama. Multiple pieces broke for most of the teams and Sean and Tie had a particular challenge getting the elf balls to go down their elaborate mini-golf course. At first, they had an elevator but that was causing more trouble than it was worth. The elf balls did finally go down the whole course but it was a very close call.

But who won the challenge overall? That was Amy and Ashley. This was not a surprise. Their masterpiece was incredibly detailed, had multiple moving mechanisms, and as the judges noted, it looked like a scene from an animated movie. They won $10,000!

Next week, a new group of three baking teams will have to make big gingerbread holiday ski chalets and create a dessert that includes fancy liqueur.
