Is Starry a worthy successor to Sierra Mist?

When it comes to lemon lime sodas on the market, there are a few that we think of immediately. And PepsiCo wants us to think of Starry as our latest go to lemon lime soda.

In an effort to compete better with both Sprite and 7-Up, PepsiCo has discontinued their own lemon lime soda Sierra Mist, and introduced us all to a whole new soda flavor called Starry. For those of us who are fans of Sierra Mist this is disappointing news. And as someone who would go out of their way to pick the Sierra Mist over both Sprite and 7-Up it is especially disappointing to see this no longer available on the market.

But how does starry live up to its predecessor? And will it be able to compete with the likes of Sprite and 7-Up? Based on our own taste testing of both the original Starry and the zero-sugar option, we have thoughts.

How does Starry compare to other lemon lime sodas?

So the big question is obviously how does Starry taste. And it absolutely does taste like a lemon lime soda. But, unlike some lemon lime sodas this one has a bit more of a sweetness to it. I don’t think that’s a bad thing per se, but it doesn’t necessarily set it apart from other brands on the market.

As a fan of lemon lime anything, I will definitely pick up a bottle of Starry if I’m in a checkout line and I am looking for a sip of some thing sweet and refreshing. However, that is not to say that I am going to go out of my way to snag a 12 pack of this new soda. It’s a good alternative to Sierra Mist, but it just doesn’t have that little bit extra that makes me think this will replace that classic flavor. I will say though I am not a big fan of how quickly Sprite goes flat in a can, so maybe that’s the edge that Starry will have over its competition.

We all have different tastes when it comes to what we prefer in our sodas, and as someone who primarily had Sierra Mist from soda fountains, I don’t know how Starry will compare in the long run. While Sprite will never be my go to lemon lime soda, I’m not sure yet if Starry will become that either.
