Kinder Joy is turning five and to celebrate that milestone they are partnering with Vanessa Lachey to help promote their new Birthday Pack launch.

First let’s talk about the Kinder Joy Birthday Pack, then we can talk about Lachey’s partnership with the brand. The Birthday Pack features the iconic Kinder Joy eggs in packs of 15! Basically, it is like buying them in bulk without having to juggle a bunch of plastic eggs.

And for anyone unfamiliar with the Kinder Joy eggs, one half features a surprise mini toy, while the other half is filled with creamy goodness of sweet milk cream and cocoa that have been topped with little bits of crunchy wafer. On the Kinder Joy Birthday Packs, there is a place to write someone’s name, making them perfect for celebrating any child’s birthday.

Now onto Vanessa Lachey’s partnership! The NCIS: Hawaii actress has partnered with the brand to help promote the launch and spread the word about what makes these birthday packs so great and convenient. We even had a chance to speak with Lachey about the partnership and of course we had to chat about her favorite guilty eat and whether she prefers savory or sweet treats.

Guilty Eats: So before we talk Kinder Joy, we are Guilty Eats and I have to ask, are you a savory person or a sweet person?

Vanessa Lachey: “Oh, savory. I used to be sweet. As I’ve gotten older, I’m more savory…
It’s the salt and it’s the sodium. But I used to be like a French toast, pancake, waffle, breakfast girl. Now I’m like, I want the sausage. I want the bacon. I want the rice with the soy sauce on it, or as they call it in Hawaii shoyu like, I want the savory.”

GE: So then what convinced you to partner with Kinder Joy on this particular product launch?

VL: “Well, this is incredible because it’s a birthday pack. There’s 15 eggs in this box, and this just came out in the fall, I believe October or November. And so for me as a busy mom who also likes to try to make all the moments happen for her kids. Right? We had wrapped filming for the holidays. Then we went to the mainland. We went skiing with the family which was so amazing. The first time everyone like really got in the snow together. Then we had Christmas Eve which is my son’s birthday. Then we had Christmas and we came back New Year’s and I went back to work and then it’s my daughter’s birthday January 5, and she’s like, Hey, Mom. I knew it was her birthday but we were celebrating later in the month going to LA. She’s like, ‘What are we going to bring to class?’ And I was like, huh did I really forget that there’s like a class of 30 kids and you want to celebrate? Yes, I did. Because I’m human. But I remembered that Kinder Joy had launched these birthday packs.

And so you go on Amazon, thank goodness for Amazon. It’s here immediately. And she took two boxes to school and it’s great because the teachers all want individually packaged things nowadays, especially with trying to be cognizant of touching and everything and I mean it’s literally a party in an egg. There’s the treat on one side, the toy on the other. It was perfect.

I was so relieved to the point that when we did go celebrate her later in January. We brought boxes… I ordered two more, put them in my suitcase, traveled with them to Los Angeles and then her and I together made these cute little cellophane party favors to give to her friends and so we just made it a little more personal and gave it a little more of a personal touch. It took all of 15 minutes. It was something we could do together and I’m all about simplifying. We still have the memories of her birthday she got to celebrate with her classmates. We got to go to LA and have a little get together with her friends in the mainland. And Kinder Joy made that easy for me in terms of not having to worry about getting together party favor bags or baking a treat. It’s literally the perfect birthday two for one favor. I am so grateful.

So of course I was like how can I share it with people? And here I am today talking to you guys, which I love.”

GE: So are there other events that you think that this would be a perfect fit for?

VL: “I mean Easter’s coming up. So I think the great thing about this is the treat side has the packaging so it’s always fresh, right? It’s convenient, when you set up your baskets, it’s going to be a fresh treat. And then the toy on the other side. There’s 100 unique toys constantly changing every year so you never know what you’re gonna get.

And so I think not only birthday parties, I think it’s great for Easter coming up in the spring. Also, it’s just easy to put it out for any summer gathering really because it is so self contained. Especially nowadays that’s what we’re all looking for.

I think even though we’re all ready to get back to normal life, whatever that is, we still are weary of putting out big trays of things where people are just grabbing. You know what I mean? So if you put out a bowl or even this display, everyone can help themselves. That’s easy. You don’t have to man the station. You don’t have a lot of fingers and a bowl of like food. I think you can use it year round.”

GE: And of course since we are Guilty Eats I have to ask what is your guilty eat?

VL: “What is guilty? You know there’s a thing here in Hawaii called a Manapua and the one that I love is a meat bun. So it is this almost sweet but not totally sweet bun with meat on the inside so it’s savory. Last year I had a bite of one, and my mom left when I was a little girl, but she was very into food. She was a foodie. She’s from a Filipino heritage. And so she was always cooking and always making things and I bit into this and it reminded me of being a kid. And I’m not even kidding. I think I had them every single week and it became a thing they were calling me Manapua on set.

So now I’ve had to turn it back because I would just be sitting around eating Manapuas, they’d have to stop and like get my teeth and make sure that the makeup and everything was okay for filming. So now it’s my guilty pleasure. If it’s a Manapua day, you know, I’m gonna get a couple of dozen and I’m going to share them with the cast or with the crew. And if you ever have a chance to try one, definitely try the chicken Manapua. It has my stamp of approval. You will love it.”
