16. Mighty Wings from McDonald’s

Remember the time when McDonald’s decided to go into the chicken arena?

Yeah, that was a complete failure.

It wasn’t that long ago when the brain trust at McDonald’s wanted to try to do battle with the KFCs and the Popeyes of the world, and serve up their own creation to the chicken-eating public,

They called it Mighty Wings.

It was 2013 when McDonald’s decided to roll out the Mighty Wings, which were bone-in chicken wings that were fried with spicy breading. I guess the thinking within McDonald’s was that, if they could do chicken nuggets, then why not go all out and after some bomb chicken wings?

It was not a good idea.

Fans come to McDonald’s for burgers, not for chicken wings. Sure, they had the nuggets and the chicken sandwiches, but no one was coming to Mickey D’s for no chicken wings. Sales of the Mighty Wings were a lot less than impressive, and the chain suddenly found itself with a surplus of frozen wings they needed to get rid of.

So, by late 2013, they dropped the price of the Mighty Wings, and it moved somewhat, but by the beginning of 2014, the Mighty Wings were put out of their misery. Believe it or not, this wasn’t McDonald’s first attempt at selling chicken wings. Remember the McWings? Yea, they faced a similar fate, which should have told McDonald’s execs that the Mighty Wings were a bad idea.

Sometimes, folks have to learn the hard way, twice.
