21. Bell Beefer from Taco Bell

This bad menu item is proof-positive that Taco Bell should stick with what they know — tacos.

Sometime in the mid-70s, Taco Bell came up with the brilliant idea of putting their processed taco meat in burger form, creating the Bell Beefer, another product that sounded great on paper, but came out horrible in real life. The Taco Bell Bell Beefer resembles somewhat of a glorified sloppy joe, at least in its appearance and feel.

In addition to the taco beef, the Bell Beefer also contained diced onions, shredded lettuce, and a mild border sauce, creating a truly unique sandwich that, in a lot of ways, was doomed to failure.

In fact, what sunk the Bell Beefer was the way the sandwich felt. According to an article on Business Insider, customers constantly complained about the sandwich falling apart when they held it, making for a truly messy experience.

Despite the fact the unmitigated mess of the sandwich, the Bell Beefer was a standard item on Taco Bell’s menu boards for nearly 20 years, when new menu offerings finally put the Bell Beefer in fast food heaven.

It was amazing that the Bell Beefer lasted that long despite its problems, proving that even a bad sandwich can live out its fruitful life.
