Spring Baking Championship was back this week with episode 4 of season 9 and it was all about April Fools. If you’ve watched the show before, you know the host Jesse Palmer is a pun master and he had a field day pranking the bakers.

In the Pre-Heat challenge, the bakers were tasked with making a fool using a specific fruit. They had to choose from Meyer lemon, orange, grapefruit, key lime, kiwi, and pineapple.

I didn’t really know what a fool was before this but now I would like one (or three), please! Many of the bakers shined during this challenge but, of course, there were plenty of missteps too. Some of the tart shells were underbaked. The judges also noted that some had no taste at all and some were just meh.

But someone had to come out on top and, for this challenge, it was Clement! His Meyer lemon flower-looking fool was cute AF and looked delicious.

Spring Baking Championship was all about fools and imposter cakes

On to the Main Heat! This time, the bakers had to make cakes that looked like pies. Even though I saw them make these cakes, it was still somewhat surprising when they cut them open and it wasn’t a pie.

There was a twist though. Halfway through the challenge, Jesse informed the bakers that they also must make ice cream with cheese as one of the ingredients. It sounds gross but most bakers used mascarpone, brie, or ricotta. Although, Christian did use cheddar and the judges actually liked it!

But what about the pie cakes? The cakes ranged in flavor from lemon blueberry and raspberry to brown butter cake with peaches and a banana cream pie cake. Some looked exactly like a pie while others looked like a mess.

The baker who came out on top this week was Luke! His “store-bought” blueberry thyme pie cake looked exactly like one you would pick up at the grocery store.

Unfortunately, someone had to go home and this time, it was Michelle. Her lattice pie crust broke apart and it didn’t look the best it could.

Next week, the remaining bakers will have to create celestial mousse cakes and have to team up to make croquembouche arbors and floral macarons for a romantic spring garden party.
