Iowa: Maid-Rite
Iowa is home to a ton of fast food chains, but one that Iowans really gravitate to is Maid-Rite.
This classic Midwestern chain has been on the fast food scene for quite a while. How long? The first Maid-Rite opened in 1926 by a man named Fred Angell. That original Urbandale location plus the original four franchises that opened toward the end of the ’20s are still in operation to this very day.
Maid-Rite is a fast casual restaurant that sells all of the classic diner foods, including their version of the sloppy joe, which is as good as advertised. There is something classic about Maid-Rite, the old-school nature of the chain and its food advertising Midwestern wholesomeness at its finest.
The next time you’re in Iowa, make sure you stop by a Maid-Rite and taste some fast food history.
