Fast Food
BERLIN, GERMANY – MAY 18: A Beyond Burger, a vegan veggie burger, is seen at the Vedang fast food restaurant in the Mall of Berlin on May 18, 2019 in Berlin, Germany. With fast food chains such as McDonald’s, Burger King, Chick-Fil-A, Taco Bell and Dunkin’ Donuts now offering ‘fake meat’ versions of their main meal options, the vegan burger industry is booming, as consumers look beyond real meat products out of health and environmental concerns. Beyond Burgers, made from pea protein, and Impossible Burgers, made from wheat protein, coconut oil, potato protein, and heme, the protein that makes the burgers convincingly taste like meat, are now being distributed globally as interest in such products grows.(Photo by Adam Berry/Getty Images) /

3. In-N-Out

Claim to fame: Burgers and Animal-style fries

The Reason:

It hurts me to put In-N-Out here because it’s such a great fast-food institution.

Known for their simple menu of burgers and fries, In-N-Out is a West Coast classic that, sadly, no one east of Texas gets to experience. I say that because, a few years ago, the California burger chain decided to put restaurants in the Lone Star State, with many of us east of the Mississippi River having hope that In-N-Out would finally expand to the East Coast.

That was false hope.

For now, the chain hasn’t put any more stores in Texas and dreams of us East Coasters enjoying those succulent Double-Double burgers and legendary Animal-Style fries have been sucked down the drain. I won’t let my disappointment ruin their ranking, though, as In-N-Out, despite courting a little political controversy during the Midterms, is a well-oiled fast-food machine.

Now, excuse me while I book my tickets to Cali.

Best menu item: Anything Animal Style

Once on its “secret menu,” the Animal Style, which consists of extra spread and grilled onions, brings any of In-N-Out’s simple to an unspeakable life. Seriously, Animal Style everything!

Worst menu item: 4X4

Basically, this is their classic Double-Double or steroids. It’s delicious, but if you want to die an early death (or die happy), then by all means, get the 4X4. For those who want to stay relatively healthy, avoid this at all costs, unless you’re on a cheat day. Even then, the 4X4 is for the pros, and not for the amateurs.
