The 25 best fast food chains in America, ranked
By Kareem Gantt
18. Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen
Claim to fame: Cajun-style fried chicken
The Reason:
It seems like not too long ago, no one outside of the south had ever heard of Popeyes. My, how time flies.
Now, it seems, nobody can get enough of this Louisiana-inspired fast-food joint. To me, Popeyes is the closest competition KFC has, and it certainly gives the legacy chicken chain a run for its money. Over the past decade, Popeyes has expanded its reach, expanding rapidly in Canada and overseas.
The chicken is the star of the show, but their side dishes are equally great. One can’t get enough of those Cajun fries, and that Cajun rice (what we call “dirty rice” here in the South) should be a national treasure. If you’re a fan of the po’boy then Popeyes serves up a tasty fast-food rendition of the Louisiana classic.
It seems like Popeyes should be ranked higher, but there are other fast food institutions that are worthy of a higher honor. Popeyes, however, is on the up-and-up, and it could move further up on the list next year.
Best menu item: Po’Boys
These sandwiches are full of flavor, and it doesn’t really matter if you get the chicken or the shrimp (I prefer the shrimp), you are sure to not get a bad po’boy at any Popeyes.
Worst menu item: Green Beans
They don’t taste bad, but these are a menu item that are best made at home.
