Taco Tuesday is a term that everyone knows and understands. It could be referring to lunch when you’re in high school or the meal you make for the family on Tuesday. What you may not know is that it is trademarked, something Taco Bell wants to apparently change.

That’s right. The term Taco Tuesday has actually been trademarked and has been since 1989. And the big shocker is that Taco Bell isn’t the company that holds the trademark. No, it’s actually their arch enemy and competitor Taco John’s.

(We don’t really know if Taco Bell and Taco John’s are arch enemies. But since it sounds way cooler if we assume they are, just go with it. Thanks.)

Since Taco Tuesdays has become such a generic term that is used by everyone, The Bell is apparently of the opinion that no one should have the exclusive use of the phrase. They want Taco Tuesday to belong to the world.

You can sigh the petition to try and help Taco Bell free Taco Tuesdays.

So what does all this mean? Well, it seems that Taco Bell has petitioned the United States Patent and Trademark Office to remove the trademark for the term Taco Tuesday. They are saying that the term is a generic phrase and as such should never have been trademarked inn the first place.

The Bell does not want to own the trademark and is not seeking any kind of money. They just want to see the trademark removed so the phrase can belong to taco lovers everywhere without fear of legal ramifications.

If you agree with them, they have launched a petition on Change.org that you can sigh to show your support. It currently has just over 50 signatures but considering how rabid taco Bell fans are, that could skyrocket in the coming days.

They have also posted a FAQ about this whole thing on their website if you want to learn more about freeing Taco Tuesdays.

So is this whole thing kind of silly? Sure. Will it generate a lot of free publicity for Taco Bell? You betcha. But when it comes to The Bell, they know what their fans want and how to have a hell of a lot of fun doing it.
