It’s time for the top 20 to come together in the MasterChef kitchen. And right away, we learn that each region will be competing almost like a team. We are talking about region against region and that makes sense since this is the United Tastes of America season.

Not only are these chefs representing themselves, but they are also representing the region they are from. For their first MasterChef challenge, it is all about making items from the state fair.

The worst dish of the night will be eliminated, which is not a surprise. For this season though, there is a twist! All the chefs from a region will be teamed up and the best dish wins immunity, but not only that but the winner of the pin will save their entire region from elimination.

This is a season about strategy more than any other season before.

MasterChef kicks off the top 20 competition with elevated state fair food

For this first challenge, our chefs have to take inspiration from the state fair and the foods we know and love. But, we aren’t talking about classic fried food or a simple hot dog. We are talking elevated dishes that are inspired by those flavors and feelings.

There are so many interesting dishes being cooked up, including a dish with lobster fries, a baked fish taco dish with homemade tortillas, and even a mushroom burger. But there are so many things that could go wrong for these chefs, especially for chefs who are trying something for the first time in the MasterChef kitchen.

After walking around to see what each of the chefs cooked up, the judges come up with their top and bottom chefs.

So who did the judges call up to judge as best dishes?

  • Northeast Region: Nina (Fried Fish Sandwich)
  • South: Reagan (Paneed Chicken Breast)
  • Midwest: Kyle (Beer Battered Lobster Fries)
  • West/Pacific Region: James (Mushroom Festival Burger)

In the end, the chef who won the immunity pin for themselves and guaranteed safety for their entire region was Kyle! This means the entire Midwest was safe!

Of course, with the best comes the worst. And we have three regions left that are in danger. So who did the judges call up?

  • Northeast: Richie (Deconstructed Cheesecake)
  • South: Kendal (Herb Roasted Chicken Kebab)
  • West: Amanda (Roasted Cod Fish Tacos)

Sadly, someone has to go home. So who was sent home first? Unfortunately they eliminated Amanda from MasterChef.
