Halloween Baking Championship was back on Food Network for the sixth episode of season 9, and it was all about skulls and swords. And as it’s getting down to less than half a dozen bakers, the competition is heating up.

For the Thriller Challenge, the bakers had to make a blondie that needed to be covered in a chocolate skull. They also had to make a warm chocolate ganache that would be poured onto the skull to melt it and reveal the blondie underneath. Oh, and they had to include a Sno Cone flavor. The options were cherry, blue raspberry, grape, pina colada, and lemon line.

I love these kinds of challenges. It’s always cool to reveal something using another edible element.

And nothing too dramatic or stressful happened during this challenge. Everyone did pretty well. There were a few blondies that were too sweet (a hazard that comes with the blondie), but beyond that, everything turned out pretty good.’

It was all about skulls and swords on Halloween Baking Championship

Stacey won the challenge with her Day of the Dead skull. It was nice to see someone besides Hollie, James, and Ryan win.

On to the Killer! For this challenge, the bakers had to put one dessert inside the other. It also had to be topped with an edible sword The bakers mainly did pies and brownies inside of pies and macaroons and cookies inside of different desserts. It was very cool and most of them looked as delicious as they did creepy. And the twist involved adding a specific ingredient that would soothe a sore throat. The choices included honey, ginger, chamomile, lemon, and peppermint.

There was much more of a struggle with this challenge. Krista did not give herself enough time to make her dessert, and it showed in her presentation. The judges also didn’t taste Stacey’s surprise ingredient (chamomile).

The judges also had an issue with the definition of a dessert being inside another. Some of the desserts just seemed like desserts put on top of each other, or it looked like there was no second dessert at all. That said, almost everyone’s sword looked spectacular!

But who came out on top? It was a tie between Hollie and James. Hollie’s brain dessert was so freaking creepy, and James’s coffin dessert was unique and looked delicious.

So who went home? That was Krista. This wasn’t too big of a surprise as she didn’t do great in either challenge, and she was in the final two last week.

Next week, it’s the semi-finals! The bakers will have to make torta della nonnas and desserts that they will have to smash for the judges.
