Great British Baking Show season 14 episode 5: Pastry week
Great British Baking Show season 14 was back for another episode, and this week, it was Pastry Week. And since no one went home last week, two people were headed home on this episode.
But before we get into who went home, let’s start at the beginning with the Signature Challenge. Tasha was back and the bakers had to make picnic pies. Overall, these pies turned out pretty well. They were a classic English savory pie with different variations depending on the flavors the bakers added.
There were definitely some issues with the thickness of the crust, and how much filling they put in their pies. But the most glaring issue was with Rowan. The tops (and sometimes the bottoms) easily came off of his pies and…it wasn’t great.
There was one incredible result, though. Cristy, who has pretty much been in the middle since the start of the season, got a handshake from Paul! The judges loved her creamy leek and mushroom pies.
Great Brtish Baking Show sent home two bakers this week
On to the Technical! This week, Paul had them making a dauphinoise pithivier, which is a potato and onion pie in a puff pastry crust. It looked extraordinary! And while there were some truly perfect ones, quite a few were flatter than they needed to be. The big surprise for this challenge was that Dana had just made a dauphinoise for her Signature, so she easily made another one for her technical. And she got second place! Dan took the top spot.
Finally, the Showstopper! The bakers had to make a display of decorative sweet pies. This was really a toss-up. Some were gorgeous and perfect and others…not so much. And really, Rowan could not catch a break in this episode. The decorations he had didn’t look great, and he couldn’t get his pie out of the dish. And when the judges cut it, it was like a soup. A mess all around.
Others had issues with their pies not being done or the flavors being off.
But who came out on top? It was Cristy!! She clearly knows pastry because her pies looked spectacular!
And who went home? That was Rowan and Nicky. They both struggled all episode with their bakes, so it was clear Paul and Prue were going to send them home.
Next week, it’s Botanical Week. Who knows what that will end up meaning? Whatever it is, the bakers are sure to make something delicious!
