Chi-Chi’s returns to delight fans once again after 20 years

If you were around during the 1980s and 1990s, you likely remember the beloved Tex-Mex chain Chi-Chi’s. Known for its vibrant atmosphere celebrating Mexican culture, along with its salsa, fajitas, chimichangas, and more, the chain was a go-to spot for anyone seeking a good time. Unfortunately, after what became the largest hepatitis A outbreak in U.S. history — combined with a shifting restaurant landscape — the company shuttered its doors in 2004.
Now, a recent announcement has sparked hope for the brand's revival.
Hormel Foods, owner of the Chi-Chi’s trademark, has struck a deal with Michael McDermott, son of the brand’s founder, to reopen restaurants under the Chi-Chi’s name. According to McDermott, plans are underway to launch new locations in 2025, which would be the first in over two decades.
“We have seen the impact our restaurant has had on individuals and families across the country and believe there is a strong opportunity to bring the brand back in a way that resonates with today’s consumer — an updated dining experience with great taste and Mexican flavor,” said McDermott.
While I missed Chi-Chi’s heyday, I’m curious to see how this revival unfolds. Growing up, Chevy’s and Chuy’s were my Tex-Mex staples, and I’m eager to see how a revamped Chi-Chi’s stacks up against those chains.
That said, it remains to be seen where exactly these new locations will be. But, I know that I will certainly be making an effort to visit one if there's one near me.
Could 2025 be the year of the revival? Sweet Tomatoes, we are calling on you to make a nationwide return!
