It’s not delivery, it’s Deadpool: DiGiorno teams up with Deadpool & Wolverine for four new pizzas
Deadpool & Wolverine is the biggest movie of the summer – and possibly the year. And now it’s gotten so big, it’s slicing its way into pizza, with four brand new themed pies from DiGiorno that are way wilder than you might expect. And yep, I’ve tried them all.
“DiGiorno is always looking for ways to tap into mainstream culture by pushing culinary boundaries through unique innovations and flavors, from our recent Thanksgiving Pizza to our all-onion ‘cry-pie,’ and we are now introducing our latest, most chaotic pies yet,” said Kimberly Holowiak, Senior Brand Manager for DiGiorno. “This summer, we’re taking it up a notch by teaming up with Marvel Studios’ DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE to create limited-edition pizzas that fans won’t want to miss—so we encourage fans to get them while they can.”
So how are they taking it up a notch? Here’s how. The four pies are: The Wade Special; Gimme Chimi; Spicy Wolvie Pie; and Maximum Pep. Each comes in a unique, collectible Deadpool & Wolverine package, and at least two of them are on the wilder side, particularly when it comes to freezer to oven style pizza.
Let’s break down these pies, which hit stores nationwide this month for a limited time, down further. And since I have already tried them, I’m going to rank them from worst to best – though of note, they were all pretty good.
Maximum Pep
Here’s how DiGiorno describes this pie: “Made with maximum flavor and zero regrets - just like Deadpool’s decisions - Maximum Pep is piled high with sliced and diced pepperoni.”
So, this is a pepperoni pie. The sausage is nicely spiced, and the cheese and sauce are about what you’d expect. Like all of these pies, it’s a thin crust pizza, and it had a nice crunch to it. The diced pepperoni gives a little bit of a textural difference, but this wasn’t that far afield from what you might get by regular pepperoni DiGiornos.
Spicy Wolvie Pie
DiGiorno describes this one as, “Crafted with Wolverine and other meat lovers in mind, this pie is stacked with pepperoni, chorizo and bacon.”
Taste-wise, this wasn’t too different from the Maximum Pep, as the pepperoni tends to overwhelm the other flavors. I could have used some more chorizo, frankly, though the bacon gave more crunch and textural difference than the diced pepperoni in the previous pie. So this gets a step up on that one.
The Wade Special
I’m going to say up front you’re going to think I’m crazy here, and I’m sorry about that. But this is described as “A sweet and salty combo not just for mercs, made with pineapple and black olives to pay homage to Wade Wilson’s pizza in the first movie.”
Yes, this is pineapple and black olives, two already controversial ingredients that together seem like someone made a monster. But frankly? I like black olives on pizza, so this was already pretty good in my book, providing a nice bit of saltiness and flavor to the pie. The real surprise here, though, was the pineapple, which was juicy and flavorful, and per the pitch offset the salty with sweet. Full disclosure: nobody else in my family ate this. They wouldn’t touch it, in fact. But that just left more for me!
Gimme Chimi
Deadpool loves chimichangas, and he’s right to say so. Here’s what DiGiorno says about this pizza: “A chimichanga-inspired pizza that is a fiesta for your tastebuds and topped with spicy cumin sauce, beef topping, jalapeno, and cheddar & mozzarella cheeses.”
This was legit great, heads and tails above the rest. The spicy cumin sauce was phenomenal, the peppers not only very spicy, but gave the whole thing a huge, enticing pop of color, and the beef topping and cheese was perfectly portioned as well. A word of warning: when I say this was spicy, it was very spicy. Not every slice was made equal, but there was at least one bit that had my mouth on fire, and sweating profusely. I never expect that when it comes to mass-produced “spicy” stuff, and as a heat aficionado, this was a lovely surprise – particularly as the heat didn’t overtake the flavor. Point being, this is the best of the bunch, but if you don’t like spicy you might want to stay away.
So, that’s the flavors. Let’s talk about the extras – and how you can win a trip to Los Angeles. First, every box except the Spicy Wolvie Pie comes with a cut-out Deadpool mask, which is very fun. And the pizzas all have a suggested retail price of $6.49.
Blah, blah, blah, shut up, we don’t care about masks and prices, give us trips! Here’s what you need to know… From June 17 (today) through August 26, 2024, head to DiGiorno.com/deadpoolandwolverine, which I assume is your homepage anyway, and you could win one of the following prizes:
- A pizza party in Los Angeles, where a private chef will make you the limited edition pizzas, and you’ll get a stunt masterclass where you’ll learn katana combat moves, just like Deadpool.
- Merc merch, aka some cool accessories and collectible swag.
- Fandango movie tickets to see Deadpool & Wolverine.
There’s no purchase necessary for The DiGiorno Chaotic Good ‘Stakes, but is “open only to residents of the 50 U.S. and DC,18 or older (or 19 for residents of AL & NE, 21 for MS).”
So there you go! Good pizza, good prizes, and to contradict Deadpool: minimum effort.
