Discover Puerto Rico and Van Leeuwen team up for a limited-edition Piña Colada ice cream
While most cocktails have a curious and convoluted history, we know exactly when and where the Piña Colada was invented: 1954, by bartender Ramón "Monchito" Marrero, and the Caribe Hilton. The delicious mix of coconut, pineapple and rum was an instant hit, infused with Puerto Rican flavors. And in honor of the 70th anniversary of the beverage on July 10, known now as National Piña Colada Day, Discover Puerto Rico and Van Leeuwen are teaming up with some superstars to pay homage with a limited-edition Piña Colada flavor ice cream.
"We are excited to partner with Discover Puerto Rico to create an exclusive flavor that pays homage to the beloved cocktail and celebrates the Island’s beautiful culture," said Ben Van Leeuwen, Co-Founder and CEO of Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, via a press release provided to Guilty Eats.
So how does this cocktail-forward collabo work? Discover Puerto Rico and the ice cream creators at Van Leeuwen have teamed up with Puerto Rican mixologist Roberto Berdecia and Don Q rum (whew, that’s a lot of folks) to specially craft the flavor. But wait, there’s more! Also in the mix(ology) is Cristina Muñoz Laboy, a local artist whose work is featured on the container.
While this is a Piña Colada ice cream made with Destilería Serrallés, the purveyors of the Don Q rum brand, unlike the cocktail itself this ice cream is a-okay for the whole family. To that end, the Van Leeuwen ice cream truck will be driving around New York City on July 10 giving out free scoops of the flavor, as well as selling branded merchandise.
If you are in NYC and want to check it out, from 11 am to 12:30 pm it’ll be in Bryant Park; from 1:15 pm to 2:45 pm, it’ll be Union Square; and from 4 pm to 5 pm, parked at 787 Coffee, which is located at 204 W. 10th Street.
Don’t worry, you can snag a non-free pint as well at Van Leeuwen locations throughout the city, with the exception of Roosevelt Field, Grand Central, Hudson Yards, Union Square, and 97th & Broadway. While supplies last, of course.
