After capturing the hearts of audiences and claiming victory on Netflix's Ultimate Drink Masters, LP O'Brien is now charting a bold new path. The talented mixologist, who recently celebrated one year of sobriety, is stepping into the spotlight once again—this time by opening her own bar in the vibrant heart of Washington, D.C. I had the incredible opportunity to sit down for an exclusive interview with the talented mixologist herself. She opened up about her thrilling journey on Ultimate Drink Masters and shared exciting details about launching her new bar.

Guilty Eats: Can you describe when you discovered you won Drink Masters? What was going through your mind?

LP O'Brien: "The moment I found out I won Drink Masters was surreal. As soon as my name was announced, a wave of emotions washed over me—joy, disbelief, and immense gratitude. My mind was racing with thoughts of all the hard work, sleepless nights, and the incredible journey that led to this moment. It was a validation of my passion and dedication to mixology. "

GE: What was the most challenging part of participating in the competition?

LP O'Brien: The most challenging part was overcoming the pressure I put on myself. Crafting complex cocktails often requires meticulous preparation and attention to detail and doing that under intense time pressure was incredibly stressful. Balancing creativity with precision in such a high-stakes environment was a true test of my skills and composure.

GE: Were there any particular cocktails or techniques you learned during the show that have influenced your style?

LP: Absolutely. One of the most influential techniques I picked up was the use of molecular gastronomy in cocktail-making. Techniques like spherification and foams opened up new avenues for creativity. These elements have since become integral to my style, allowing me to push the boundaries of traditional mixology.

GE: Can you tell us about your journey into the world of mixology? What inspired you to become a bartender?

LP: My journey into mixology started with a deep love for flavors and a curiosity about how different ingredients interact. I was inspired by the artistry of crafting cocktails and the joy they bring to people. Working in various bars and learning from seasoned bartenders fueled my passion, eventually leading me to pursue mixology as a career.

GE: How do you stay inspired and keep your cocktail creations fresh and innovative?

LP: I draw inspiration from various sources—culinary arts, nature, travel, and even art. Experimenting with new ingredients and techniques keeps my creativity alive. Collaborating with other bartenders and chefs also provides fresh perspectives and ideas, ensuring my creations remain innovative.

GE: What inspired you to open your own bar?

LP: I was inspired to open my own bar because I wanted to create a safe space for creatives that allows them to thrive and learn while pushing boundaries. The idea of having a place where I could
continuously innovate and share my passion for mixology with others was a powerful motivator.

GE: Can you give us a sneak peek into the concept and theme of your upcoming bar?

LP: Our upcoming bar will be a creative hub meets test kitchen with a drive to push education, empathy, and safe spaces for creatives, including those in food, beverage, photography, and videography. Expect an immersive experience where innovation and learning are at the forefront.

GE: What kind of experience do you want to create for your guests at your new establishment?

LP: We aim to create an unforgettable experience that goes beyond just having a drink. From the moment guests walk in, we want them to feel transported into a different world. The focus will be on exceptional service, innovative cocktails, and a warm, inviting ambiance where every detail is thoughtfully curated.

GE: Are there any signature drinks or unique elements that will set your bar apart from others?

LP: Our bar will be a canvas of history, painted with the rich hues of culture and resilience. Imagine a menu that transcends the ordinary, taking you on a journey through time. One signature theme might explore the living rooms of the past, where the oppressed found solace and strength. In these humble spaces, whispers of freedom and plans of escape were born. Another theme might delve into the sanctuaries of churches, where faith and hope blossomed into movements for justice and change. Each cocktail will be a testament to these powerful stories, crafted with ingredients that echo the essence of these profound moments. By shedding light on these narratives, we aim to educate, inspire, and connect our guests, turning every sip into a step through history's rich tapestry.

GE: How do you plan to incorporate what you've learned from Drink Masters into your new bar?

LP: While I can’t feature what you saw on the show, I’ve been working hard to showcase a new skill set
focusing on my canvas—art form cocktails. Many features will focus on community creations led by our team's guidance. This approach ensures that our offerings are collaborative and innovative.

GE: Where will the new bar be located?

LP: Our new bar will be located in the heart of the city, in a vibrant neighborhood known for its lively
nightlife. We wanted a location that is easily accessible and has a dynamic energy that complements our concept.

GE: Do you have a personal favorite cocktail to make and why?

LP: My personal favorite cocktail to make is a martini. It tells you everything about a bartender's capabilities. The precision and balance required to make a perfect martini reflect the skill and expertise of the bartender.

GE: What advice would you give to aspiring bartenders and mixologists?

LP: My advice is to stay curious and never stop learning. The world of mixology is vast and ever-evolving, so it's important to keep experimenting and pushing your boundaries. Network with other professionals, seek out mentors, and most importantly, stay passionate about your craft.

GE: How do you see the cocktail industry evolving in the next few years, and how do you plan to stay ahead of the curve?

LP: I see collaboration being key for the success of all of us. Utilizing subject matter experts will be crucial. By embracing collaboration and continuously learning from each other, we can innovate and stay ahead of the curve in this ever-evolving industry.
