It's a dark day in the world of food news, especially for those of us who grew up with a certain fruity, striped bubblegum. That's right; the legendary Fruit Stripe gum is being discontinued by Ferrara Candy and killing a staple of most 90s kids' childhoods.
If you never got to experience the joy and flavor of Fruit Stripe, you truly missed a great. Each piece was striped with a variety of different colors and delivered a burst of fruit flavor. Did the flavor disappear after a minute of chewing? Yes, but that's not the point! That 60 seconds was delicious and packed with flavor. And it didn't matter if the flavor disappeared because each pack was filled with a bunch of slices; you could just grab another piece to experience that fruit flavor all over again.
I remember going to my local 7/11 at least once a week with my mom to pick up sour straws and a pack of this gum. It had so much more flavor than any fruit snack at the time and the only comparison I can think of is Starburst jelly beans and those weren't around yet.

It was also special because of the Zebra mascot (named Yipes) and because each pack came with a temporary tattoo. And as a kid, there is really nothing cooler than a temporary tattoo. Or at least it was that way in the 90s. Today, it seems like the kids are looking for skincare, iPads, and Stanley cups.
It's unclear the exact date they will stop producing this fruity gum, but as it's still on the shelves and online, you'll want to get it while you can. Once it's all been bought (or chewed), the company will not be making more. Or at least they won't until the nostalgia for the gum makes them more money.
