Goldfish Spicy Dill Pickle review: The perfect snack

I’m as surprised as you are.

Do you like pickles? What about Goldfish? How about spicy pickles? All of these things sound fine on their own, but to be frank it wasn’t 100% clear if they would all work together. Good news, then: the limited edition Goldfish Spicy Dill Pickle crackers are the perfect snack.

I’m always a little iffy about snacks flavored like pickles, and I shouldn’t be. The relatively recent trend of pickle-flavored chips perfectly captures the flavor of pickle juice running into your potato chips, without having to deal with the sogginess. It’s the best of both worlds if you consider the only two worlds as “non-soggy potato chips” and “pickles,” which I’m sure we all do.

Still, I don’t personally have a big pile of Goldfish crackers on the side of my barbecue plate, so I was unsure how that particular flavor combo would pan out. I’ve also had mixed results with some of the non-basic Goldfish flavors… I recently picked up the Frank’s Red Hot flavored Goldfish, and while I will never turn down anything with Frank’s Red Hot, it was a little more spice than that classic buffalo sauce flavor.

Not so with the Spicy Dill Pickle crackers. As promised, these have the distinct taste of dill pickles, with a non-overwhelming amount of prickly heat right at the end – perfect for those who like spice, and those who are more spice-averse. They’re also perfectly seasoned with whatever Goldfish is sprinkling on the crackers. It’s enough that it feels like there’s something extra on top versus baked in, but not so much seasoning that it cakes your fingers.

In fact, these seem to have mastered the sprinkle ratio, as it’s a clean snack, as well. I know that is potentially a weird thing to say, but when you have something with seasoning on it – think Cheetos – that seasoning tends to get everywhere. I don’t know how Goldfish pulled it off, but the Spicy Dill Pickle sprinkle stays on the Goldfish, not on your fingers, your table, or the floor.

And every member of my tasting group agreed – eying these with suspicion before they popped a few in their mouth and a look of surprised pleasure passed over their faces. This is, as said, a great snack. And as also said, it’s limited edition – but if they entered the rotation full time in the supermarket, I might add these to my regular snack rotation, as well.
