Now here’s some news we’re not nuts about: Hormel Foods Sales, LLC, has voluntarily recalled two Planters products due to a possible Listeria infection.
The good news here is that the recall is pretty limited. It only impacts 4 oz. packages of Planters Honey Roasted Peanuts, and 8.75 oz. cans of Planters Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts. And narrowing the window of danger even further, it’s only for products that were shipped to Publix distribution warehouses in North Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, or Florida; and Dollar Tree warehouses in Georgia and South Carolina. If you didn’t buy those specific nuts at those specific chains in those specific areas, you are a-okay to go nuts on those nuts.
This is also a preemptive recall – at this time, nobody has gotten sick from Listeria monocytogenes, and it’s only because one facility in April may have been contaminated.
That said, per a press release from Hormel, here’s what they have to say about Listeria – and why it’s important they recalled these nuts ASAP, just in case:
“Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”
That’s… Pretty bad. So if you did purchase nuts and have already eaten them, obviously be on the lookout for any symptoms. If you’re not sure whether you have purchased potentially impacted nuts, here’s what to look out for on the UPC symbol:
For the Honey Roasted Peanuts: UPC, 2900002097; BIUB 04 11 25
For the Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts: UPC, 2900001621; BIUB: 05APR26
Hormel notes that if you do have one of these products, you can discard it immediately, or return to the store for an exchange. And there’s an investigation underway to determine the “potential source of the contamination.”
